Is there a good (read: cheaper) substitute to GW's Matt sealant spray-can? Something that can be found at a local home-improvement store maybe?

Mine is running low and I'm curious about potential alternatives...

Thanks

1.) GW doesn't sell a matte sealant spray for years. Currently they only sell a satin (semi-glossy) sealant.
2.) Why is the cheapest the best quality? Using no spray is the cheapest.
3.) Dont use matte sealant myself, but friends say that Vallejo Matte Varnish is one of the best, even compatible with Quickshade.

Testors Dullcoat is my spray can matte of choice.

Although to be honest I've tended to lean more towards brush on alternatives lately. Vallejo Matte Varnish is great, but I find even using a cheap acrylic matte varnish like those found at Michaels for $1 +/- to be useable (Though a little less matte finish).

Just to clarify, this is the product I'm referring to:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470015a&prodId=prod1200065

I use it to give a "dull" look to my vehicles on to seal in the weathering powders from FW.

Link doesn't work; takes me to GW homepage, but if its 'Purity Seal' Then it is indeed Satin.

The best quality finish will likely come from spraying clear high gloss lacquer first, then matt lacquer after. Try stores that sell car paints in rattle cans, UK have halfords, they stock allsorts of cans.

There are tons of threads on this topic - search by varnish and sealer. I am telling you this, as there is a ton of info already out there, and you don't have to wait for others to reply here, and may find what you want.

However, if you don't want to bother...

My preferred matte spray can is testors dullcoate.
Its a bit pricy, but is very well regarded by many.

For airburshing, I use either liquitex varnish cut slightly with alcohol, or if you can find it, this

Testors model master flat clear acryl.

This stuff is amazing - I air brush it on as well.

best of luck, and remember - ALWAYS spray on a test model first!!!

Army Painter Anti-Shine Matte Varnish. Not as good as Testor's, but looks almost identical except upon close inspection and it costs less for a twice as large can.

I tried ArmyPainter Matt Varnish over Citadel paints and it came out terrible. I let the paint completely dry over night then applied a thin coat of the varnish on a Blood Angel simply for protection and it literally ate the paint. It became very cloudy then the varnish and paint started leaking into the cracks taking away all the detail. After about an hour I came back and an arm had fallen off...The varnish actually ate through the glue as well...Worst experience EVER! After I I saw what it was doing I dropped it into a container of Dawn Power Dissolver(which in my opinion is the best way to rip paint off old models without messing up the model) and the model was completely destroyed. Not sure if I did something wrong or it doesn't react well with Citadel paints but I will never try it again..Wasted a 6 hour paint job.

Sounds like the propellant and solvent killed your paintjob. Army painter sprays need to be shaken A TON to avoid that.

That's the one out of production for over 5 years that I talked about.
Vallejo Varnish doesn't have an aggressivre solvent, avoiding problems even the Armypainter Varnish has with Quickshade et al.

The VMC matt varnish is kind of good, IMO.
