Ok, This is not a very original topic but...
I stopped into my FLGS today to buy some paint and while I was there I took a look at some of the new Space Marine kits. The first thing I looked at was the new tactical squad box and I was very pleased that it comes with nifty combi-weapons, plenty of assault weapons and a missile launcher. But most importantly, the price hadn't gone up too much ($40 US now, used to be $37.50 IIRC).
But then I looked at the Centurion models. First of all, I don't get it. It's like they want A BIGGER TERMINATOR and they want it to look like a metal box to match the vehicles. But I guess this is the C:SM model to be on a 40mm base just like the TWC are for the Space Wolves. Whatever.
Then I looked at the price...
Seventy-Eight freakin' dollars for 3 models! Are they Nuts? Even the Thunderwolf Cavalry only cost $54 for 3 models!
Sternguard are a hefty $50 for 5 models, but at least you get all of the combi-weapon bits.
The new Librarian looks great, but $30 for one model?
Discuss Dakka.

yeah pretre, you've heard it a billion times because you pose to Dakka 30 times / day. But C'mon - a nearly 50% increase over the price of an equivalently sized model?

I'm down to only 30 a day? Damn, I'm slipping.

Equivilant to what? Centurions are large than Terminators but are smaller than Dreads. They have quite a lot of parts in the kit too.

It is the "new tax" every new model must pay off it's mold pattern in the first week of release.
I still look at the "Khornmower" and think $190 for that model, costs more than a Baneblade or Fortress of Redemption = NO, no, no, no freaking way.
The Centurion models are not so bad after a little tweaking:
The cost is a bit much as pointed out, it is a bit backwards but I saw what I could do to make them look better and HAD to get them.
I think of them as my three replacement dreadnaughts.

I was thinking of equivalent (plastic wise) to Thunderwolf Cavalry. But Centurions cost 50% more.
EDIT: OK it's closer to 45% but still.
There is also this :
"Astartes Ultra"
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440270a&prodId=prod2160196a
An entire Space Marine Chapter (1200 + models) for the low low price of $11,500 + shipping.
This price is so low, it's practically exactly what it would cost to buy all 1200 + of these models separately.
(paint not included, some assembly required.)

Something to consider is that the Centurions come with the bitz to configure them in every possible way they can be purchased for the army. I'm magnetizing my box, so that's like 4 different units. I wish more of their boxes had this level of bitz inclusion.

That's actually incorrect. There's a N&R thread that shows the discount.

Centurions are 93 dollars a box here in Canada.
If I remember right, GW sets their prices so that they'll make money on the investment of designing and creating and producing and whatever elsing the product in question.
Centurions cost so much in points, that they'll probably sell around as many boxes of them as they would Land Raiders. So to make their money back, they have to charge more.
Centurions use roughly as much plastic as a Tactical Squad, but almost every Marine player is going to need at least a few boxes of Tactical Squads, so they can expect to sell a lot more of them. Generally, a player won't really need more than one, maybe, maybe two boxes of Centurions, due to their high points cost. Oooh, something else neat if you don't magnetize them.
Regardless of how you build them, you'll get at least 6 special weapons for your other infantry.
Because the kits come with 6 flamers and 6 meltaguns that are compatible with normal Space Marine infantry. There is a small bit that has to be removed to make it sit on the hand holding the handle, but it's really no trouble. The pieces are admittedly a bit shorter than normal, at least the flamer (not sure about the meltagun), but I was able to use them with two of my Assault Marines passably enough.
