I don't know if this is the right forum section, but oh well
I'm starting tau soon and I want to know which units would make a solid core?
As in do I want 2 firewarriors or 4? 6 crisis suits or 9? 1 or 73 riptides? xD
Any advice you could give would be helpful

Depends on how crazy you want to get. And the final list size you want to get to.

Id say 3-5 boxes of firewarriors, 3-6 crisis suits, 1 commander suit, 1 riptide, 1-2 devil fish, and a hammer head. Just to start with anyway. Gives you a good start and its all useful.

Nightlords 2,750 Points
Tzeentch Daemons 2250 Points
Nurgle Daemons 1750 Points
Death Guard 2250 Points
Thousand Sons 1750 Points

Also depends on how cheesy you want to be.

Tau can play and perform very very well WITHOUT riptides, but riptide spam is much easier to pull off.

Typically 3-4 boxes of firewarriors, a riptide, 3-6 crisis suits, couple of hammerheads/skyrays (same body, its very easy to kitbash an attachment that looks like a missile rack for a skyray), and some pathfinders (not sure how many are in a box now days, i usually run 2 units of 6-8) would be a good start. Stealth suits are a personal flavour thing, theyre not exactly "awesome" but they work and provide some variety to the army.

Another unit thats pretty good but under-used is the Piranhas. A unit of 5 is 200pts and gives you a lot of anti-infantry dakka and a pretty good deterrant for assaulty armies, since the 4" gap between vehicle squadrons cannot be walked through. Forces them to either go around or deal with them first, then theres the 10 drones they dumped off behind them to deal with too lol.

I would suggest against broadsides personally. The models are crazy expensive and theyre kinda situational now days. 50USD a model is insane when you need 3-6 of them to even be viable at all.
