I'm going to kick off my 'make your own hills' marathon and before I even started I'm stumped!! Now of course I'm not making perfect circles here...but what are some ok ranges for size here on each hill? Is there an official rule on how big or small each piece of terrain can be? OMG the choices!!!

I made a few hills from 6" to 12" square, around 3" high. Seemed to work for me. Flat tops and some access areas and you're good to go!

There are no official sizes - but do be sure they're at least large enough to put a whole unit on GW's own plastic hill has one feature you may want to copy - it's in four pieces and can be arranged as two long or two short half hills on the edges of a gaming table.

How will you be storing them? I'd find an appropriate box/shelf/carrycase/whatever, and then build the hills to fit the storage.
