So yeah, title pretty much says it all. I want to start tyranids (well I'm bouncing between them and tau) but What are the best core units of tyranids? As in what should I buy first to be successful in my nids

Ahh, Kaiju Nids. Or (incorrectly translated) Nidzilla (Kaiju actually means "strange creature").

Termagants are cheap and unlock the best Troop choice - the Tervigon. If you are planning on running Tervigons (which are the only MC Troop choice) you will need Termagants. Lots and lots of Termagants.
For HQs, the most popular is the Flyrant with 2x devourers.

Personally, if you want to start learning the army, get the Battleforce. You'll get 3 Warriors (which can be run as Primes giving you an HQ or two), 16 Termgants, 16 Hormagaunts (which can be built with guns for more Termgants), 8 Genestealers (which should be run as Ymgarl) and a few ripper swarms.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

Already ahead of you with Hive Fleet Kaiju

I'm going a totally different route as, allegedly, there is a new Tyranid codex being released within the next few months (January I believe).

The battleforce is a good starting point, but if you're wanting to go for a traditional Kaiju feel with big monsters, you can't beat this:

Winged Tyrant.
2x Tervigon.
20x Termagant plus a ton of extra Termagants.

With added bells and whistles it's 750 points of pure death and it forms a great core for whatever Tyranid army you want to run.

Personally I wouldn't buy anything right now - unless you happen to see a Battleforce or a second-hand army at a bargain price. The forthcoming new codex (November or January, depending on which rumour you believe) is bound to nerf some units and buff others.
