I don't remember much from old crons, but from what I remember WBB stung like a whenever my orks played them

Then came new crons, armed with RP. The save went down, but it doesn't get cancelled out. And phase out disappeared but that's not the point I'm making

So which was actually better?

'I'm still smarter than the Imperial Guard'"

When you consider the prevalence of Res orbs in most warrior/immortal squads, WBB and RP are the same statistically (pretty sure WBB was a 4+), both being a 4+. This is where RP would seem better, as it's not cancelled by AP1/2 or ID weapons, but when you consider the drop from a 3+ to 4+ armour save on warriors, it's pretty much a wash. That said, the points drop accordingly also meant you got more warriors.

On the whole, I used to find WBB more annoying than RP, as there was no way to reduce it (whereas these days it's not that hard to take out the lord), but it was balanced by Phase Out. On the whole, Necrons as an army gained more than they lost, with reduced durability being balanced and more by greater numbers, versatility and the removal of Phase Out.

That was what I was thinking, in a 1v1 a WBB cron would win, but the phase out loss coupled with everything else gave crons a real boost

RP protocols is, IMO, far superior to WBB. WBB was negated by power weapons and double T strength weapons. RP is not, and that is a huge difference maker, even with the temporary reduction in save (temporary because its easy enough to increase back to 4+).

I definitely liked them more in the old codex. Id say we'll be back was better. Overall i just liked them more before.

RP is much better. Among other things, it allows far more flexibility in maneuvering forces as you don't have to stay within the res orb bubble to maintain the ability to get the chance to stand back up.

I'm not a necron player, but I greatly prefer playing against RP than WBB. Not because of a power level thing, but because WBB was insanely annoying.

WBB:

"Yes, I roll it on a 4+, unless there isn't another unit within 6" of them, or I get hit by instant death, but unless unless there's a lord with a res orb nearby, or unless you slingshot through a monolith, in which case it gets rerolls, unless I get to 25% of my army left, in which case I don't get the roll at all."

RP:

"I make a roll, those guys get back up. It's like FNP, but it ignores ID and plays slightly different."

Worse, I feel like a lot of NECRON players didn't really know for sure how WBB worked either, which just made it that much more painful and awkward when no one else did either.

This too. The fact that 9-10 years later you still had almost weekly threads in YMDC about how WBB worked was pretty good evidence that it was a terrible rule.
