Ok, moving on with the fourth of my conversion kits for the venerable Imperial Guard Chimera. This one is intended as a replacement for the Destroyer Tank Hunter, currently only available through Forgeworld.

Like the other kits that I've produced, this one again fits over the back portion of the Imperial Guard Chimera, replacement the rear hull.

The kit is in two pieces, the hull superstructure and the main hull mounted weapon.

I think you were asked last time to maintain a single thread and not start a new one each kit.

And the name? There is a already a Vendetta.

There is a word for a wargamer with an empty paint bench.

The mount parts are nice looking. The cannon really looks like you raided the hardware store... Could use something to help detail it.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

It's the hex shaped nut. Look at the tubing on some actual military artillery and you'll have a better grasp on how to structure things.

Damn, that's pretty cool looking, infact that's something similar to what I had in mind for using your first kit for, which I have, but haven't built yet, oh well, suppose i'll have to get one of these too!

Vendetta is a fine name, you can call it whatever you like!

but this is a big laser not a conventional artillery piece, so the barrel might well not look like a conventional artillery tube

(I also think it will 'come together' quite a lot when cast, compared to looking as if it's made of various bits including a hex nut and a model oil barrel)

Tomcra has offered this master to Great White Models, as with his last two, so I'm just wondering how much demand there would be for this kit before I agree and purchase the master?

Given it'd be about the same price as the Abrogator at £15?

You'll need to come up with a different name for it, though:

Yes it would be confusing otherwise, I'd probably favour a WW2 themed TD name.

OK so if not Vendetta what about 'Defender'?

In the first Imperial Armour book from FW there was mention of a Chimera APDS-6a Defender; a field workshop variant used by the Armageddon PDF which was basically a Laser Destroyer mounted in a chimera hull. As FW never made said Defender surely this name is up for grabs.

Count me in for one LavuranGuard, I have the stug conversion kit and had been panning to use it as a laser armed tank destroyer but as tomcra has a ready made one I'd probably pick one of them up too, monies permitting!

What's the legal side of using another company parts ( oil barrel )in a model you intent to recast and sell?

It would have to be replaced with tube and plastic strip for the rib-bracing.

if there's no real creativity involved (bluntly put): none whatsoever.

it's just a technical representation of an existing shape. that's not a protectable creative work.

Thought I'd add my two cents as the modeller of this piece.

The oil barrel involved comes from a cheap pound store toy that my son decided he didn't want anymore. It was made by some obscure toy company and I've no idea who.

With regards to it's suitability for recasting, I think Bolognesus hits the nail on the head. The part as it sits is indeed just a technical representation of a shape that could probably be made with tubing and plastic card. Hence, it is probably not a protectable shape.

There's a different between using something like that, and say, a recognisable GW part, which I've shied away from using in my work for obvious reasons.

Close, but not quite right tomcra

It's a faithful representation of an existing, purely functional shape.
Now an oil barrel is not a protected shape in any way, shape or form. Scaling it to 1:56 (or what have you) is not a creative act - it's purely to make it functionally/technically compatible with other models. Therefore there's no creative work involved, it's therefore no more protected than the hex nut (which is also a functional shape pure and simple, just scale 1/1)

It's a non issue guys, I've agreed to buy this one and I have a plan in place to switch out the barrel for the same shape produced from scratch at my caster's suggestion so we're all square legally.

Ah yes. 'Replaced' with the 'same shape'.

Wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more.

Because, as said, whoever cast the peice before obviously invented 55gal drums.

Frak...I have one I use as a burn pit...who should I send my reparations check to?

I've been working on another conversion kit lately. This one is intended as a heavier version of the venerable Chimera that sacrifices troop space for a pair of forward firing heavy weapons (bolters perhaps?) It was very much inspired by the top of the Malcador turret. I like the idea of independently targetable sponsons.

The weapons for this piece will come as two separate items. I'm currently working on them at the moment / waiting to sand them down so that they fit the curve of the sponson.
