With the new edition of Apocalypse a few months old, and now that some people have had some experience in these larger games, what's the general consensus on the new Destroyer rules?
Back in 5th Ed Apocalypse, I thought Destroyer was a pretty neat idea. For the biggest weapons short of anything atomic, I think GW handled the idea pretty well. For those who are new, back then a Destroyer hit wounded automatically and inflicted Instant Death. While some of you are probably saying "this is pretty much how it works now", remember that Destroyer still allowed Armour Saves back then. While most, if not all Destroyer weapons were Ap1/2, if for some reason you came across one with Ap6 or Ap-, even your Guardsmen and Boyz would be getting a save against such things. Now however, the power of these weapons has been increased by a huge amount. Now, a Destroyer hit will always wound on 2+, with no saves of any kind allowed. Vehicles suffer even more, with anything short of Super-Heavies suffering an Explodes result on 2+, with a 1 still causing a Penetrating Hit.
Now I like the fact that Apocalypse has been updated. It's nice to have more recent rules for our war machines, and the additional stuff like Finest Hour etc is a cool touch, but have they really gone too far with Destroyer weapons? My Reaver Titan, which I bought about 3-4 years ago, is armed with 2 Laser Blaster, for a total of 6x 5" Destroyer blasts per turn. In 5th Ed Apocalypse, it was a bit cheesy, even I'd admit that. In 6th Edition however, it just stinks of powergaming. It also makes for a very boring and uncinematic game, which is what Apocalypse should be about: Imagine your Heroes of the Imperium charging across the battleground into the enemy lines, only to be vaporised instantly on the first turn. Calgar, Mephiston, Draigo, all of them would be pretty much dead by that initial blow. If Invulnerable saves were allowed against such wounds, then yes, I'd be more ok with that (Mephiston's still dead mind you), but not allowing any saves whatsoever just makes for a game where whoever can fire the most Destroyer on the first turn wins.
So what do you think? Was Destroyer better in 5th Edition when it was significantly weaker, albeit still powerful?
