Hey Dakka,
So ive recently been repainting my orks using mainly washes. Its a pretty simple scheme and my klanz spot colour used on their shirts and icons/banners is just plain agrax earthshade. Agrax is a wash so when it comes to painting up vehicles it wont be very practical, how do you guys think i could replicate the colour using dry brushing? This is mainly warbikes and truks we're talking about but ill be doing a battlwagon too at some point.
Thanks!

Not sure how a wash is no good on vehicles.. but you would get through a fair whack of it on larger models.

I find Liquitex Transparent Raw Umber Acrylic Ink to be kinda close to agrax earthshade, maybe with a touch of black in, it would be spot on.
If you make a custom wash up using matte medium and the inks, you can probably make a huge bottle of agrax equivalent on the cheap

Sorry if i wasnt clear its not that wash is not good on vehicles, its just it would cost me too much to buy enough agrax for all the painting i need done. And its not as quick as a drybrush on bigger models.

If its about economy, I reccomend buying a bottle of Liquitex matte medium, and some Liquitex (or daler rowney) Acrylic inks, and some flow aid. (Tbh you may already own matte medium and flow aid for other jobs)
This would set you back maybe £10-15 tops and give you considerably more than £15 worth of wash from GW at £2.40 per 12ml. Just will take a little playing around to get the colour matched up exactly.
With more colours of ink, youl not really need to use a GW wash ever again. I use both though; for just a little bit I use a GW pot out of convinience, for jobs needing large amounts I mix it up.

edit; as I price checked that GW wash, I noticed that on the GW site all the images of washes have clear lids... none of them actually do... theyre black tops right?

Yes they have black tops dont know whats up with GW website.
Its not so much that washes look bad on vehicles, and if i was doing eldar for example id probably try and find a cheaper wash, but seing as its orks im painting, i really prefer the effect that dry brushing has on them, so i need some non-wash paints that resemble agrac as closely as possible

Personally I tend to dry brush and wash and glaze on most models. Have got a thread going about my Orks project too ...no vehicles have spawned yet though, been knocking the boyz out so far almos got 4 units of 12 finished up all in different clan colours.
But for the skin, They were all painted different colours, Drybrushed a pale yellow, and washed green.

I guess you are talking about agrax earthsahde over white base? as the colour you are talking about?
I'm pretty sure the colour is 'raw umber' when you look at paints from Windsor and newton, Daler Rowney or Liquitex.
