Hello Dakka, I purchased some wood elves about a year ago with the intention of painting and playing. Now my friend has decided to join me in my conquest of Fantasy (i aminly play 40k)
I have a box of Glade Guard, a box of Dyrads and the Wood elf noble long bow guy thing ish? Were going to start small with points 500 will be our first game once we finish painting which at the rate i paint would probably be next year
Anyways i was wondering if you guys could come up with a good starting list and many some ideas as were to go from here, theres just so many items ans such i can take i dont know where to start, Thanks for any feedback and happy Wargaming.

Side note; I wanna go for a themed army methinks, lots of trees and archers, Reading the lore about the shadowy darker parts of the forest is kinda what im basing this army off of.
my paint scheme is based off of Undead Slyvannas Windrunner from WC3. and the trees are going to be bleached bone/white.

Good job on finally picking up the paint brush, it's usually the hardest part. Wood elves a really fun and rewarding army to play, even if they aren't the most competitive. Now, 500pts, Slyvannas themed army? I can work with that

Heroes (You have 125pts to work with).

Wood elf noble with scout kindred (Allows him to join scouts/waywatchers and makes him a skirmisher) and hail of doom arrows to obliterate a unit on the first turn. 120pts

10 glade guard with musician 126pts

10 Dryads with Branchnympth132pts

5 waywatchers 121pts (Use remaining glade guard)

Noble deploys with watwatchers (Someone say Dark rangers!) and with smart movement simply walk around anyone who wants to charge them (10 inch march with no shooting penalty. if you get charged you've been stupid) while waywatchers are immune to shooting unless its in large numbers (- 1 to hit for Skirmisher, -1 for forest stalker, and then you either force them to shoot long range for an extra -1 or force them to move. Its common for people to shoot my waywatchers with 6's followed by 5's). Glade guard are there because they have to be, but are generally a good unit, as are the Dryads. Such a big unit should be able to handle most things in 500pts quite well, but be aware of the things they won't beat. Warriors of chaos, large units and most monstrous infantry will need to be softened with HoDA first.

Good luck and PM me if you need any more help. If I know anything about fantasy, its my wood elves =)

Hey, I have an Idea! Take your pointless inflammatory posts else where, I heard Warseer likes them.

Wood elves are a great army, over priced here and there, but still a good army. I started with them, and I learned them, and now I can readily draw with the best fantasy players in my club. He can trust me, they are a good army, but they make even better generals out of the player.

Maybe he doesn't want the throw everything (read hydra and unkillable dreadlord) at them with OP-ness galore with the Pendant an BotwD. Maybe he wants a tactically rewarding army that is fun to play and has the under dog feel. Its not always about winning, but that's not to say wood elves can't win. They just have to work harder for it, making it all the sweeter!

I find great use in Glade guard, the S4 shots are great, kinda limited at 500 points(what army isnt?) would it be better to have a unit of 12 GG for more shots and drop 2 dryads for the points? or is 10 a pretty solid number for dryads? Most of my games are at the 1500-2000 level, so very curious about that. Love my Wood elves!

The only problem with that is that then he can't take a unit of waywatchers. Admittedly 12 glade guard would be better then 12 dryads, but he HAS to make 3 whole units to be legal and he only has to unit boxes. So you have to make 3 units out of 16 glade guard and 12 dryads, so the ONLY way I can see that happening is if he proxies in some waywatchers. Otherwise he would have to buy another unit, from an army he might not like. Do you have any other ideas, im kinda stumped as to make it any other way with the limitations of models and points.

buy a 2nd glade guard box? You are right though, I cant think of anything to really work with there besides what you posted. GW did make a rule where empty bases filling the slots is legal as long as the front row is full. may have to do that untill more models. I cant find that entry currently ill have to get back to you on that, think a faq though
