Opening statement:
"Its the mission made famous by the
movie Black Hawk Down.."
No love for Mark Bowden and his excellent book. The movie, like 99.9% of all adaptations only scratched the surface of the emotional, violent, and insanely brave courage that occurred Oct 3+4, as well as the political and bureaucratic bungling leading up to the battle. Should be required reading in all high schools, in my opinion.
I remember being an 11 year old kid watching the Somalis drag the future Medal of Honor recipients through the streets like a prize. Don't remember what I felt, but my mother was frightened, and told us never to go into the Army. That year my oldest brother joined and I joined 6 years later, even made my mom sign off for early enlistment.
I gotta reread this book.
