Next week a friend and I will be playing a 2k Doubles tournament and we are looking for some help with our list. We played a doubles a few months ago and despite me only having played 2 games before that we did well. For that we ran 3 Dread Knights, 3 Long Fangs packs with missiles, and a drop pod of combi's + a Rune priest with Jaws. Our games were won or lost by a single point each time, first blood was key for winning, and with the pod I brought we got it right away most games. If the tournament was being run the same way I think we would try that list again, but the TO made a few changes, here is how this tournament will be run.
2000 Points Total
900-1100 Points Each Player
1 HQ and 1 Troop required each
3 Two and a half hour games instead of 4 two hour games
Instead of opponent win % as tiebreaker they will keep track of all points scored in games and use that as tiebreaker.
If you get a buy you get 7 points toward tiebreakers
First blood is still worth 1 point, but Slay the warlord and Line breaker are worth 2 points each. You can get slay the warlord twice if you kill each teammates warlord.
Whatever team deploys first must place their first objective on their board half and any other objective they place must be on their opponents board half. The team deploying second can place objectives normally.
Games types are now pre-decided as listed below
Game 1: Big Guns Never Tire, 4 Objectives, Dawn of War Deployment
Game 2: The Emperors Will, Hammer and Anvil Deployment
Game 3: Crusade, 4 Objectives, Vanguard Strike Deployment
Right now my teammate is still leaning toward a gun line army, either Dread knights + Long Fangs, or Grey Hunters in Pods + Dreadnoughts w/TL Auto cannons & Strike Squads w/Psycannons. My concerns with with these lists are that if we go first we only have 1 objective on our side, and with all the points in our back line we wont be able to capture or contest all the objective on the other side of the field. Furthermore our heavy support can be a liability game one as everything but the dread knights can give up an easy victory point.
I am trying to build a list that plays specifically to the tournament. First blood being worth comparatively little makes me think that a strong alpha strike squad is a waste of points. With 6 possible points to be gained from Slay the Warlord and Linebreaker I think we should be building around these objectives. If we don't take static units like longfangs and place all objectives outside of our deployment zone we can take the fight completely to their board half and try to deny them line breaker. Then we take tough HQ's that will at minimum live through the game, hopefully be good enough to slay other warlords in a challenge. Finally we take as many denial or even scoring units as we can, with no kill points games we can take minimal units knowing only 4 units have to be alive at most at the end of the game to contest. Our game plan will be to contest all objectives, get line breakers, keep our warlord's alive, and either keep them from getting line breaker or kill their weaker warlord. Giving up first blood dose not matter here as if we do what we try to we come out by one point. The biggest problem i see with this is that we don't gain many points for tie breakers. The last singles they ran like this top 3 were all 3-0, they guy that got 3rd(and no prize) would have been first if it was normal tiebreakers, and they guy that got first had a buy.
My initial list was Logan w/multi melta long fangs flanked by 4 wolf guard packs with a cyclone in each. Draigo with paladins would spearhead our phalanx while two dread knight's jump in and troubleshoot the largest threats giving us time to march up the field and get to close combat. All though I can get the minimum of what I want at 2000 points I don't think its everything we need to win, 500 points more and maybe, but not at 1000 a side. At this point I'm just coming up with crazy bad lists like Canis and 6 packs of little wolves and I need some direction and I need some input from more eperinced players on they types of units and tactics they would bring to this tournament.
As far as meta game I know there will be another team running 3 dread knights + Space wolves, and another team or two with at lest 1 dread knight. There will likely be a lot of tau, last 1350 singes there were 4 players playing 2-3 riptides. Not always but often there are players with 2-3 hell drakes. Daemons & Tyranids are somewhat popular as well. With the release of the new space marine codex nearly half the store is running them. Overall its Tau gun lines, monstrous creatures, dread knights, riptides, hell drakes, and lots of MEQ's. I can't remember seeing a single Ork, Eldar, Necron, or Imperial guard army played at a tourney yet.
If you have taken the time to read all of this I would like to thank you and let you know I would really appreciate any strategies for this tournament, lists, or just general tips and tricks you have to offer.
