I've been goaded into starting a preheresy Death Guard army, and any way getting to the point, I noticed on the Death Guard decal sheet on forgeworld's site something called "Scythe Honours" depicted as two crossed scythes. Is there any background on it or was it just something the designers came up with to fill in space on the sheet?

Well I don't know about forgeworld but in the HH books I only know that the Primarchs two bodyguards and the first captain carry them to indicate their elite status and as a homage to their lord.

Come into my web, said the spider to the fly.
Come rest your wings, and let us talk eye to eye.
For I am a spider, and you are the fly. Now that you are here, let us sit, and say hi.
But I have have no morsel to share, nor anything to eat. But wait, what is that stickiness upon your feet.
Ah now I have you, now I can eat. Now I can enjoy you, or store you as meat.
For I am the spider, and you are the fly. How else could it have gone, between one such as you, and one such as I.

I thought that there were at a minimum, two with Mortarion at all times, but realistically way more than that?

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high

After each battle, Mortarion would chose one man who distinguished themselves, and they would share a cup of the most vile poisons imaginable. Refusal to drink was dishonor. The marines would not die from the poisons, but they woul endure significant pain for a time. It was one of the highest honors they could receive.

The Deathshrouds are they called? I haven't read flight of the Eisenstein in a while but it's stated in there about his bodyguards and who else carries them I think.

The Scythe Honours is a personal commendation from Mortarion and is depicted as a pair of crossed scythes the marines wears on their chest plate.

Thank you very much jareddm.

With so many of the awards and iconography from 40k being heresy era or post heresy in origin it's been kind of difficult to find things to add detail onto my army with.
