I might be a little late for the party but since when is the wave serpent direct only? Was going to pick up 4 additional serpents from Dark Sphere but its seems as if they are out of stock, same thing with waylands...
Is this temporary or permanently?

It's permanent, happened about the end of June/start of July.
.. in the Uk anyway.
The lien the stores have been fed is that the serpent is available in the Battleforce set.
 
Direct only for the foreseeable future.
Long, long LONG term there's a chance it might be merged with another kit ( say the falcon or another/new tank) and put back in the stores but that's speculation really.

Since it for super buffed in the new codex and became crazy popular. My FLGS said they can't keep up stock levels in store, so maybe they just gave up...
