I am playing in a Tale of Gamers in my local club, the point of which is to build up a 1500pt army over 5 months (300pts per month).

Here is what I have in mind for CSM:

Lord
Mark of Slaanesh, Murder sword, Gift of Mutation, Sigil of Corruption, Veterans of the Long War

Sorceror
Mark of Slaanesh, Force staff, Level 3, Gift of Mutation, Sigil of Corruption, Veterans of the Long War

10 Marines
2 plasma guns, plasma pistol, power sword
Rhino - dirge caster, havoc launcher

9 Marines
Melta gun, powerfist
Rhino - dirge caster - havoc launcher

10 Noise Marines
Sonic Blasters

7 Havocs
4 Autocannons, Veterans of the Long War

3 Obliterators
Mark of Nurgle, Veterans of the Long War

Predator
Autocannon, Heavy Bolters, Havoc Launcher, Warpflame Gargoyles

I am pretty happy with this list but I was considering dropping the Noise Marines and either the predator or havocs in favour of a unit of 20 cultists and then either a bike squad, raptor squad, Warp Talons squad or chosen squad.

My options would be:

20 cultists with pistols/combat weapons and 2 flamers

20 cultists with autoguns & 2 heavy stubbers

5 man Bike squad with 2 plasma guns & lightning claw on champion

5 man Raptor squad with 2 melta guns and lightning claws on champion

7 or 8 man chosen unit with 5 flamers and champ with combi flamer

5 Warp Talons with MOS, Veterans of the Long War

Not sure which way to go. Advice please chaos fans!

Hi,

I'm not keen on Plasma Pistols because of the Chaos Boon table- If he has the opportunity to roll on it after fighting challenges and stuff with that power sword you paid for, don't let him die early from a plasma pistol overheat.

The list looks great.. Noise Marines should always have 1 type of Sonic Weapon, so that unit is nice. Unlocking them as Troops is a good move. Gift of Mutation on the HQs is fun, but rolling up Crusader or Adamantium for a combined 20pts might not be.

The predator is good for this list, but they are best when taken in pairs. If you drop it and wiggle points you may be able to get 3-4 Bikers with Melta x2. Bikes are so cheap compared to our last Codex that it's silly to ignore them when you need a nice Melta "scalpel unit" in a list.

Good luck bud

Thanks for the advice.

If I am going for a fast moving melta unit, would raptors be worth considering?

How about something like a lightning claw for the champion?

I was hoping to jiggle my chaos lord around and get him a burning brand and a bike if I took the bike squad but that might have to wait until I have more points available.

Raptors are good if you want a cheap deep striking unit, but with Rhinos being our main Troops transport (and fragile) it's nice to have a Toughness 5 (or 6) unit that can A. be deployed to add another target that might save your rhinos and B. be a target that has a wider move area.

If you use bikes or raptors, they are terrible combat units. They should be a delivery system for a Lord of any Mark, but not actual combat units themselves. I'd leave melee weapons beyond Power Swords off them completely.

Burning brand on a bike is a great move.. Another reason why Lclaws or Fists on Fast Attack are not good for CSM- They're just a cheap Brand delivery system in that case.

How about a lord with a small unit of warp talons then?

He could always split off, burn a unit with the brand and then assault them while the talons chop up something else.

Alternatively, against tougher targets he could burn them up before him and the talons both assault.

BTW, this list doesn't need to be super competitive, just to hold it's own against a variety of opponents while also being fun to play.

I hear ya.

I actually like Warp Talons. They work well for me unsupported- I guess that means they could work great with a Lord.
