My commander is also my test mini. I prefer to just dive right in and make it up as I go. It's very relaxing, as opposed to planning it all out. Then it's work!

Its always fun when you get to the first paint stage of a new project
Keep up the good work!

What colour primer did you got for with a black/yellow scheme? I'm thinking yellow army painter spray and then painting the black areas would be quickest.

'Ain't nothing crazy about me but my brain. Right brain? Riight! No not you right brain! Right left brain? Right!... Okay then lets do this!!

I thought about it.. I am painting Abbaddon Black over the plastic.. then working up from a brown to a yellow. Didnt take long (compared to my lamenters)

No Primer atall?

I would atleast suggest a brush on primer, GW imperial primer, some acrylic gesso from the art shop... better still a spray primer, gw's one is a tad pricy, but is an okay product.
Not using a primer makes your paint work prone to being rubbed off later. Especially models that will be handled while playing games.

The best option I can think of for this army is a yellow spray primer... but never having used those I cant speak for how good their coverage is; It might be really worth doing a coat of white first up too.
This would really reduce the overall paint thickness on the finished model, because covering black with yellow invovles more paint than doing it the other way around.

That criticism asside, I like the work youve done so far the yellows kinda bright and crisp

They will have that issue even after being sealed? My Thousand Sons were painted black by hand and they've been around for 10 years.

I'm not calling you wrong- but maybe the sealer and tester's gloss has something to do with their durability without primer?

Thank you for your tips and comments! I am still in the air with what to do with my Troops. I feel like spraying the models yellow would be more work in the long run because including the helms/arms/guns/legs, the black would take a long time to hand paint on. I am deathly afraid of spraying primer on my miniatures because of the humidity. No matter how much I shake my cans (up to 3-4 minutes sometimes), they always seem to spray furry. Not good! So that is why I've been doing minis with just Abbaddon Black painted over the plasted lately, except in the case of my two Heldrakes.

I have not decided what to do about the rest of the army.. but at least I am happy with the scheme. I was worried I would not like them.

Sealer should help, Gloss is pretty durable if you let it cure properly before touching it

I'd still reccomend getting a tub of white (or black) acrylic gesso for priming.
They can be mixed with colours to make a tinted base coat, but I would reccomend having the mix mostly gesso.
Theyre incredibly thick, but do shrink as they dry.
So you can be somewhat sloppy with application (not too much though)
Liquitex do a nice gesso, Personally I use Windsor & Newton Galeria stuff as its cheaper where i shop.
I normally Spray prime though, only bother with brush on for a really fiddly small piece tbh.
The Citadel Imperial Primer would be similar to black gesso I guess.
Should have better adhesion than just abbadon black atleast.
