But also why?

Why would you take a ward save against non-damage and what effect would passing it have?

Saves are for discounting wounds.
Have you suffered a wound? No. Move along to the next spell.
Some spells give weird exceptions to it though like.... Pit of Black Horrors I THINK?

You don't get saves against that of course
It'd be good if MR had a better effect though, people would seriously start using it if it constituted a save against any detrimental effect (Like Deny the Witch in 40K). Of course the price would need to be changed

You get ward saves against wounds, as the rules for saves specifically allows that. You also get ward saves when specifically told you can, against non-wounding effects - killing blow, for example, does not cause wounds but allows a ward save.

Rune Maw is the only thing that can "ward" those types of things. While wards aren't only for wounds, they do specify that they are stopping damage.

There is only 3 though correct?
Wounds, remove from play and remove as casualty.
Or am I missing some?

Except that it clearly isn't. The word outright is a clue, the absence of "causes multiple wounds" is the kicker.
Wounds, as Peasant pointed out, are one of the methods for killing models. There are 3 others, of which slain outright is one.

I have to respectfully disagree.
I'm sure you saw that coming.
There are only 3 ways that models are killed in this game.
Reduced to 0 wounds
Remove from play
Remove as a casualty.
I'll start a thread so I don't get 'reported by someone.

the rule book is very clear about what a ward save can be used against.
spells that do not cause a wound and/or do not specifically state that a ward save CAN be taken agasint them mean that you cannot take a save agasint them.
I forget the page in the BRB (away from books atm) but look up characteristic tests.
you don't get saves vs those
