i don't know what it's called properly, but I have a question about the nametags (picture). Can I write down a name I like or are there restrictions?

if you have room to write a name go for it I generally take it the plates on the shoulder are the current wearer and the others on legs and such are warriors that have done something special whilst wearing that armour they are to be remembered as most marine armour is recycled over generations you have to do something pretty special for the honour to be bestowed

Id love to know where the idea that Power Armour is recycled comes from? What books that in? Because thats the first time I've ever heard anything of the sort?
I know that the apothecarys preserve the geneseed of fallen battle brothers wherever possible, but have never read about them saving suits of armour from fallen brothers. I always figured they were built to fit, and a new guy will need a new build.

Pretty much all the marine codices talk about all equipment from power armor, bolters, close compat weapons, special weapons, vehicles and such being passed down over the generations and that the new users honor and venerate those who have used them in the past.

Hehe, In honesty I've only really read the older codecies cover to cover.
Can recall this being true of posh relic level equipment, but not particularly any old equipment in general.
Il hit the books you're probably right

Yeah, there was a big deal about it in a WD article on the marine release month, they spoke about the different marks of armour and how many battle brothers will have a mix of different marks passed down from different eras.

I also think the UM omnibus mentions "generations of marines wore this armour before me" or something like that. (Uriel ventris)

@Hairysticks - You've gotta remember what seems mundane now is often venerated by successive generations - just look at us marveling about the aqueducts and hypercausts of the Romans. When they were built, the Roman's thought nothing more of them than practical buildings. It's a similar story for Space Marines. They'll wear their armour with great reverence for their forebearers, but they won't stop to consider that their descendants will revere them.
More On Topic - I usually leave the banners for Latin/High Gothic script. In 10,000 years there are likely to have been hundreds of marines pass through just one suit and of that hundred each and everyone will have been done a great deed at some point or another - hence I imagine it would get a bit cramped trying to fit in everyone's names without insulting their memory by omitting some. Latin is always a good bet. Stuff like 'Mortis' (Death) and 'Ignis' (Fire) always go down well. Campaign names are also a good choice, linking the suit to a specific piece of fluff.

In the HH books, the 1st sign of Horus' betrayal was exterminating that world where the soldiers wore mini versions of Space Marine Armor.
They had an operating STC for Power Armor that they set to make human sized PA.
Rather than the added accolades that finding an STC of that magnitude of value, Horus destroyed it and the entire world it was on.
That would indicate that PA was already a rare commodity either recycled, each set built by hand, or a combination.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

If it was not recycled, then almost every Space Marine would be wearing Mk VII+
