Hello, I would liked to build a 1,500 to 2,000 pt army with a few super hard IC's or Monsters and not much else, it doesn't need to be particularly competitive, more just for fun. I want to put all my eggs in one basket (or five) and field 5x300 point characters for example.

I'm new so don't know all the names or what the best choices would be but I was thinking I could have a Daemon army, with a couple Daemons as my HQ. But then I would want very few troops, maybe a squad of 3 at the most. And then I could pick some single character Daemon heavies.

My problem is the Troop choices, for instance if an SM captain is riding a bike, you can take Fast attack bikes as a troop choices. Are there any other rules like this in any of the codex. That will allow me to take max 3 models that are hard as a single troop choice or preferable a rule that let's me take some big flying monster as troop choice?

Any ideas?

Eldar Iyanden can do this quite well.

Space wolves can get 8 characters in at 2k and take minimum squads of 3 wolf guard as troops.
Google the space wolves list of legends

Grey Knights can also do a very low model count army at 2k.

Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.

But troops choices are Rangers or Dire Avengers or Jetbikes. All individually a liitle weak. Unless there is a rule I've missed.

Obviously the Avatar and Eldrad Ulthran are pretty hard.

Tyranids can take tervigons as troops and fill up with mcs.
You do need to get 10 termagaunts for every tervigon unfortanatly.

If you play chaos, you can take a decked-out DP and Abaddon for HQ, take 3 Helbrutes for elites, take 2 five-man quads of fully kitted chosen for the troops, and heldrakes for FA.

EDIT: And 3 defilers for HS

Best you will get from that is bikes as troops. No real options to turn monsters into troops, or 3 model uints that are super hard. The FOC was designed to limit the ability of people to make armies just made up of mega characters and monsters. Closest able are the 'nids with Tervigons as troops, but for each tervigon you still need a unit of termagants which don't fit your vision. Space Wolves can get an inordinately large number of characters, but still need at least 2 troops units as normal. Just be aware if you make the list you want for games with friends you will have issues taking objectives without any actual troops.

For a friendly game with someone you can make arrangements to play a special list with them for the game and do what you will with their approval, and come up with some special rules to allow some part of your army to take objectives, or be counted as troops for the battle. Friendly games with someone who agrees allow you to do whatever you want. If you are looking for a force to play at regular game days wherever it is going to be a tough sell.

The reason Iyanden were mentioned is that Wraithguard can be troops if you take enough of them (not having to actually use the Supplemental Codex either, just fluff-wise Iyanden have the most).

That said, SW are probably closer to what you want, as PredaKhaine mentions.

Daemons flying-circus could also work (2 DP's as HQ, 3 as HS), but you'd need to accept that you'll still need some minimum-10 troop selections (Unless you can take Nurglings as Troops? not sure on the min size for them but don't think they score...)

With wolves, it should be possible to do the following list

Logan
Ragnar
Niall
Ulrik

2 x 3 squads of Wolf Guard for troops
Arjac Rockfist being taken as part of one of them.

Bjorn The Fell Handed (can be an elite iirc)

Thats 1400-1500 points of just characters there in a legal army.
Then adding in a min squad of blood claws to get Lukas The Trickster in,works out as 7 characters. Swapping out a wolf guard squad for blood claws for Lukas is a legal army with about 12 men for troops in total.

Just take a farsight enclave army and take the farsight command team.

It is basically Farsight and 7 commander bodyguards that are all characters and can all join units separately. 8 of them will run you roughly 1300 pts (don't have point costs on me). I can't really think of anything that would fit your request better.

I personally use commander farsight and commander bravestorm

Thanks for all your suggestions, I'm thinking of going with;

HQ - 1,200 pts
Bloodthirster
Skarbrand
Daemon Prince x3

Troops - 300 pts
Bloodletters 2x10

Blood throne of Khorne

I accept I need some troops and bloodletters look pretty cool.

What is the general consensus on Chaos armies, should I have a mixture of Legions, or is sticking with just Khorne OK? I want the army to be very CC orientated.

Option 1) DAEMONS:

Fateweaver
Lord of Change w/ ML3, exalted reward (portalglyph), greater reward
2x3 Nurglings
3x Tzeentch Daemon Prince w/ 3+ save, ML3, 1 has exalted reward (grimoire) and greater reward, the other two have two greater rewards and one lesser reward

11 models (with some more troops being created during the game) and should be at about 1850ish points.

OR:

Drop Lord of Change and one Daemon Prince for a Screamerstar.

Option 2) DOUBLE-TROUBLE DEATHSTAR MAGIC:

Space Marines allied detachment (Imperial Fists)
Chapter Master w/ shield eternal, artificer armour, power fist

5 Scouts in a Land Speeder Storm

6 Devastator Centurions w/ grav cannons, missile launchers, omniscope

Farsight Enclave Primary:

Farsight
O'Vesa
Torchstar

Commander w/ 2 missile pods, target lock, vectored retro-thrusters

3 Crisis Suits w/ 6 flamers
1 Crisis Suit w/ missile pod

1850-2000 points

24 models

Tactical note: Chapter Master, O'Vesa, Torchstar, and Commander go in Centurion unit. Turn one, you split fire the orbital bombardment on one thing and the missile launchers and O'Vesa's gun on something else (no one is going to be stupid enough to deploy close enough for you to use your gravs on turn one) and the Commander on a third unit. With ignores cover and tank hunters, you should be able to get first blood. After that, use split fire to shoot O'Vesa at one thing while your gravs annihilate something else.

Option 3) GREY KNIGHTS HEROHAMMER, DELUXE EDITION

Draigo

Grand Master w/ psycannon, rad and psychotroke grenades, meltabombs

Solodin

Solodin

2 Stormravens w/ MM, Assault Cannon, hurricanes, psybolts

3 Dreadknights w/ teleporter, sword, flamey-thingy

2000 points, give or take

9 Models.
