So I wanted to put together a Necron army that's still competitive but in no way resembles The List, so no wraiths, barges, or scyths, and here's what I came up with:

Necron Overlord: warscythe; mindshackle scarabs; resurrection orb.
• 5 Crypteks: 5× Harbinger of Destruction.
Necron Overlord: warscythe; mindshackle scarabs; resurrection orb.
• 5 Crypteks: 5× Harbinger of Destruction.

15 Necron Warriors
• Ghost Ark
15 Necron Warriors
• Ghost Ark
8 Necron Immortals

Necron Monolith[/b
[b]Necron Monolith
3 Canoptek Spyders: 3× gloom prism.

I've done quite well with this list, winning almost all my games. But I played a demon flying circus list last night and just got destroyed. It was painful. He had Fateweaver, LoC, and 2 Tzeench heralds, fully decked out, along with some hounds and screamers. I've actually played flying circus a few other times and managed to win, although they were definitely closer than most of my other games. The thing that was different this time was he managed to roll iron arm. Once the princes were str 9/ t8 i couldn't really shoot them down, and their lashes were enough to pen my vehicles. Is there anything I can do if I run into this again? Or anything I can change about the list to give it a better chance? I'm trying to think of ways to change the list that keeps the core synergies intact. Thinking maybe deathmarks with a despairtek, but I'm open to other ideas

The key to strategy is not to choose a path to victory, but to choose so that all paths lead to a victory.

War is beautiful because it establishes man’s dominion over the subjugated machinery by means of gas masks, terrifying megaphones, flame throwers, and small tanks. War is beautiful because it initiates the dreamt-of metalization of the human body. War is beautiful because it enriches a flowering meadow with the fiery orchids of machine guns. War is beautiful because it combines the gunfire, the cannonades, the cease-fire, the scents, and the stench of putrefaction into a symphony.

By 'Tzeench Heralds' I assume you mean 'Tzeentch Princes'? Otherwise he's using too many HQ slots. The other thing I noticed is that if he's got Lash on those Princes he's either cheating or not reading his Codex close enough. They have to be Slaanesh Princes to use Lash, which would require a Slaanesh-marked Greater Daemon in an HQ slot, which I don't see. Unless I'm reading something wrong, he used an illegal list.

I had it wrong. Here's his list:

Fateweaver

Daemon Prince of Slaanesh, ML 3, Armor, Wings, 2 Great Rewards

10 Daemonettes 90
10 Daemonettes 90
10 Daemonettes 90
10 Horrors 90

8 Flesh Hounds
8 screamers
Daemon Prince of Tzeentch, ML 3, Armor, Wings, Exalted Reward, Greater Reward
Daemon Prince of Tzeentch, ML 3, Armor, Wings, Exalted Reward, Greater Reward

The key to strategy is not to choose a path to victory, but to choose so that all paths lead to a victory.

Well, I battled Daemons with my Necrons several times in RTTs and always came on top. You have to focus on his scoring units and use great mobility and firepower, with troops in Night Scythes, Annihilation Barges, Wraiths, and DLord(s).

His daemon units are pretty small, so it should be no problem for your warriors and ghost ark to gun them down, just focus your fire on them until the unit is gone.

One thing you should consider is the cryptek that grants the D6 S8 hits if the unit is charged. This is a major pain to deal with for smaller daemon units and lone MCs. Put those in with your large warrior blocks.

Another thing, telsa, tesla, tesla. Massed Tesla fire is a nightmare for daemons (I play a Tzeentch/Khorne/Slaanesh build myself and I play against a Necron player on a regular basis), especially if you opponent is limiting his unit size to 10 or less. If you have them, I recommend 2 Annihilation Barges maxed out with Tesla weapons. They will kill far more daemons than the Monolith.

I'll throw in some advice from a daemons player since the above seem to be crons players? (maybe i got the wrong impression)

Focus the grimoire carrier. Thats one of the two princes. That will reward you with the ability to kill fateweaver. That means no more re-rolling random dice or on the warp table.

If youre playing an objective game and want to focus his troops thats fine but be aware that by going to ground and being behind ruins + nightfighting the horrors will sometimes have a 2++ rerollable when camping objectives.

Focus Fire imo in this order. Once he loses a prince and fatey his offensive power wont be that scary. 8 Hounds isnt so bad and neither are the screamers without heralds.

I run a Tzeentch Circus, and I generally go into Telepathy, trying to get Invisibility on one of my two Princes equipped with an Exalted Reward. If that works I take the Grimoire on that Prince and now I've got a 2+ rerollable cover save if I Jink. It makes the Grimoire-holder very hard to kill if you don't have cover-ignoring weapons.

In general though, going for the Grimoire holder first is a good idea. My son (plays Tyranids) generally goes for the softest targets first and has had good luck with that. If I wind up not getting any FNP on one of my Princes, he usually focuses that one down with his Flyrants + Hive Guard to eliminate a good chunk of my offensive power.

Going after Fateweaver while he's buffed with the Grimoire is an exercise in futility though. I'll sometimes land him on the ground out of charge range just to try to draw fire away from more vulnerable stuff. Some opponents just can't resist unloading on him.

Hey NinjaStar, how did the gloom prism fare? Ice been pondering adding those or one on mine instead of going naked.

As for your problem: are you dead set against anni barges? They're really a much better choice than the monolith against flyers. Also as far as the easiest and quickest way to kill a prince I think you hit it right on the head: Deathmarks and despair tek. It's got to be in the top three units in all of 40k for dealing with problem models permanently, if not the best. I have a small unit of 5 marks and the tek and they've been amazing. Against that list though maybe you want two squads of them or at least a larger squad than mine. They're cheap too compared to the models they'll be killing.
