Space Marine Scout with Sniper Rifle

Hello, everyone! I have been aware of Dakka Dakka for some time, but just joined today. I have been painting minis off and on for over 30 years-- not amazing at it, but I sure do enjoy it! I currently have a large WHFB Empire army loosely based around Ulric/Middenheim and the core of a Lizardman army I never seem to get to...
Now, as if that wasn't enough, I really have a hankering to do a Space Marine army. I have never played 40K, but I love the SM models and would like to create my own chapter/theme. Please be kind if I ask dumb questions in the 40K forums...

Welcome to Dakka Dakka, I would recommend reading up on tactics, lists, and Battle Reports. I play in the Clackimus area in Oregon. Send me a line if you need some starter advice.
As for your situation, I would recommend Dark Angels. They have the cheapest models now being in the starter box sets. I would check out some ebay and focus on terminators. They are one of the best infantry units and Dark Angels get them as troops if you select one of two hero types.

Hi. If low model count, and strong units is your thing, the elite of the elite, the Grey Knights could be for you.
Typically you would be fielding 10-30 units rather than the crazy model count that Imperial Guard or Orks can get (at 2000 points it's something like 300 models for both armies)
They also have tough vehicles and walkers, and the ability to run an Inquisition only army, which can be made up of models from virtually any tabletop game (even Fantasy)
Also I see that you are competent in green stuff skills so that would allow you to further personalize your army.
