hi folks

as the title suggests - what army point size would you feel comfortable playing with on a 4 x 4 board?

i'm building an ad mech force for 30k and previously playing 1000pt lists of DKOK is enough at this board size but 30k do have a lower model count varying on your chosen build. I will in time get another 2 tiles but for the purpose of drawing up lists for playing when i get home from working away what do you suggest?

Writing a 1k ad mech list is pretty bad BTW, they need at list 1500pts to get going - unless myrmidons turn out cheap as chips?

i'll be playing against deathwing so another low model count mob

if a dolphin will jump out of water for fish, just imagine what it would do for chips?

4x4 is quite small, I wouldn't suggest playing much above ~1250 on it to be comfortable, especially when you factor in horde type armies, that can really suffer with the space on them.

Elite armies can cope on the small board up to around 1500 I've noticed though. So if both of you are playing with those, then it might be okay. Best way really is to try it and see.

And I have played foot guard at 1500 (with 106 models) on a 4x4 table a couple of times, and, well, it completely fills up the deployment zone, and then the board, and you can't space the men properly, so I wouldn't recommend it.

1500?! that board would be FULL if orks or nids were around lol.

I wouldnt go any higher than 750.

1000pts is a good pt level to play up to on a 4x4. Anything over gets awfully crowded.

1000 has been ok for me on a 4x4 but I wouldn't go further. I once played against hoard nids with dw on a 4x and it was totally unfair. He couldn't even move his units around the combats that never ended and I just ground him down. Plus using the rules for terrain of d3 per tile there was like 10 pieces on the table. Seemed unfair.

Our LGS has 1v1 tournies on 4x4's and they are 1350pts. It's not that bad, I've played a few 1500 on a 4x4 but anything over that I'd have to goto a 6x4.

I need to return some video tapes.

1500 is the maximum I'd think.

i think model count probably dictates it the most as super elites like GK and DW will take up little room.

Ad mech are pretty much the same so far from what ive seen and i think 1500 will be as far as i can go for a few games with them against DW.

I was waiting for Blake at FW to do some more city terrain tiles but i guess i'll be ordering 2 more sooner rather than later now to get some decent sized games played now.

It really varies. I think 1000 points is about the place where most armies will feel a little cramped.

I've done 1250, but that was with Eldar and Dark Eldar, so lower model count was okay. 1000 points of Orks or Nids is just about too much.

It's spelled "cavalry." NOT "calvary."

It depends on what you play. Eldar? 500 points. you need the space.

Otherwise, Geoff from the Independent Characters has been pushing 1500 on a 4x4 as pretty fun. Obviously you tailor your list for the table size, but I've been meaning to try it myself.

Im not a huge fan of 4x4 boards on anything over 750 points. I play DE though and in general 4x4 boards are not that good for us unless we go coven cult, as it mitigates most of our speed and ability to re-position.

I say 500-750 points. Even the old Combat Mission scenario/special rules from 4th edition was set on a 4x4 board, and that was 500 points.

It just seems odd because 2000pt games nowadays are crammed full on a table.

i've only played up to 1k so far as im still trying to consolidate on my learning of the rules. I dont imagine 2k to be too much fun but then i am speeding up as i go along without having to look at tables every throw.

some people play armoured battle groups so i'm just after finding a happy medium with points values and gaming on a table at home. 6 x 4 is as large as i can go - beyond that needs to be someone elses place as i dont have the table to accomodate or the room sadly.

Yesterday I saw a 2000pt game between 2 angel armies being played on that size table.

I've played Nids vs Horde orks in a tourny on a 42"x 42" board....you wanna talk about packed. That said, we typically play on 4x4's and keep our games at 1500 points, if we want to go up to 1750+ we move to a 6x4 board. In 5th edition playing on a smaller board could really change the army builds that won the local tournies, as you could pretty much outflank right into melee every time. That's not really possible anymore, so a 4x4 should more than suffice for 1500 points.

Think about this logically. 6x4 is your typical board these days, and that's good up to 2000 points, at least (I think 'ard boyz was 2500 on 6x4 wasn't it?).

You shouldn't have any issues with 1500 on 4x4.

I really wonder about the people saying 750 is the max on a 4x4 though. When they are playing 2000 points do they use a 8x4 or something bigger?

Really? [You'd spend 2/3 of the game moving towards each other]
