Hey Guys!

Was thinking of some plague infested terrain to go with my chaos guard, one idea was a "Trench of decay" filled with sand, copious amounts of mud and corpses, and converted from the Wall of martyrs imperial defence line, i really wanted to proxy it as a ADL, could this be done?

As well as several other ideas, for example could i proxy a fortification for a different race? quad linked big shoota turrets would be awesome for a quad gun Ork barricades would make sexy ADL's too!!

So, to sum up, can i make custom terrain models (or use third party ones) to proxy the fortifications in the current rules?

Good idea... and YES. Do it. If an opponent has a problem, why are you playing against them? Their stuff probably isn't even base-coated.

Try http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/130329-painting-blood-n-gore-lonewolf-style-blood-tutorial/ for gore?

So long as the pieces you are using are pretty close to the same size as the actuall pieces, I have never known anyone to have an issue with using other models for the fortifications.

I am in the process of building an ADL for my Eldar army.

ADL proxy of aprox same size - no problem.

Bastion proxy ditto, preferably non-imperial? OK

Skyshield variant, built to match size, height etc - i guess, but i'd rather you used the real one.

FOR proxy - no. just no. Buy the real thing. Every single FOR proxy i've seen had been more roomy on the battlements and towertop than the real deal, and has more firepoints than the real one.

I like your variant trench-o-dead-cadians idea

Non imperial scenery is always fine by me.

Given that GW refuses to make non-imperial scenery (barring the ancient ork barricades that anyone with a bitz box could have made anyway) it just means that every single battle is on a trashed imperial world

The problem with the idea that only using gw models for bastions is that the description given in the book says. page 116

Medium building:
This doesnt say you must use this model, only that its a medium building.
Fire Points: As per model.
This doesnt say you must use the gw model and are restricted to the 6 on the bastion model.
Weapons: 4 emplaced heavy bolters (typically one on each facing)
This does tell you that your medium building has 4 and only 4 weapons on it, and then it goes on to tell you where they are USUALLY found
This does not restrict you to placing all 4 guns on one side if you really wanted to (your not going to make friends this way)

Medium Building rules are layed out on page 92.
A medium building is classified as something larger than 6x6, and no larger than 9x9, and can only hold 20 models embarked.

The Book never says you have to use the exact imperial bastion model, and gives you rules on what your chosen building needs to fit within. And while one could argue that because it says "Bastion" in the composition field, you could feasible make a 9x9 building out of multiple bastion boxes.

The ADL on the other hand does make specific mention of the adl kit and the exact number of pieces contained within, so if you are going to customize that I would try and stay within the size and shape of the existing pieces. which is going to be difficult with the wall of martyrs trench peieces, as they are bigger than the actual aegis in length, I suppose you could cut them down to a similar size and then it would work.

The Skyshield is backassed in its description as it tells you its a skyshield pad, and then tells you access and fire points are as per model, giving you some leeway i guess.
The fortress is the same way, it tells you fortress of redemption, and then goes to tell you the buildings must all be connected (wich is odd since the model doesnt come unconnected).

Generally ive found as long as it looks good, you wont see many arguments (tournament scene is a different monster tho, always check with t/o for custom fortifications)

I thought a FOR listed it as a small building and a medium building or something in its description. Basically it defines it self as a multipart building. I could be wrong...

But are they actually bigger? Certainly it is only the total length of the wall that matters? If you use Wall of Martyrs pieces so that they do not exceed the total length of Aegis, why wouldn't that be fine?

The problem arises from the wording of the ADL, it says x amount of long and x amount of short pieces. You could just measure the length and use the trenches as the adl, line, tho if you ever plan on playing in a tourney it may be safer to cut the trench into pieces of same length (ive cut some of my trenches, they clean up nicely in smaller portions, makes for more angles and customization)

But not cutting it up is merely a limitation upon yourself, as you're free to arrange your ADL pieces in any form you like. What it the difference between WoM piece and ADL arranged to a form of that WoM piece?
