I like the idea of simplified army lists for everything out of the box, but will it be a Ravening Hordes style reboot of the army books or just simple lists for beginners?
Interesting that they're going back to magic as an expansion. That hasn't happened since 5th edition. Automatically Appended Next Post: Although, they're not doing retailers any service by keeping a MAIN COMPONENT OF THE GAME direct only...

Maybe it's my English reading comprehension that is failing me... but does this mean that the starter set will be ordered only online, or through a store, but no stock held in the stores?

I think that it means that the special edition version like 40 k dark vengeance limited edition will only be available for order from them.

I'm interested... hopefully simplifying the army lists will make for a more balanced game.

I think Tim is not a native speaker, therefore my reformulation.
While it is not beyond GW to make 9th edition rules limited to 500 exemplars, this rumour seems to just suggest one unlimited starter, one unlimited magic box and one limited starter.
BTW this army list thing is something predicted by Harry and Hastings.

Interesting, sounds like they're going back to 6th edition with the army lists included and the Empire vs. O&G setup.
Quite a good move IMO, that was the last edition of the game I actually enjoyed.

On a side note, why on earth redo the O&G book? It was the first (or one of the first) books for 8th. We've still got 6th ed. books that need an update first.

Terrible move, no rules, no mini book, why would anyone order the box?. You get an incomplete rule set, and some minis which dont even make a quarter of regular army and barely stand on their own, not the best way for new players to start.
6th and 7th were terrible editions dominated by 2 or 3 armies, i hope we are not headed that way again, thou i have not seen rules rumors yet.
8th has been the best edition yet, they only thing they need tweeking is, making flanking disrupt steadfast and tone down unit wide/large template destructive spells like dwellers and purple sun. And that is it, you are golden.
They could also do away with random charges, there are no random charges in chess and no one argues against its tactical aspect.

Well tbh the direct only box if nothing else partially makes this a plausible rumour for me. It seems that is GW's eventually goal, all those dirty independents stealing their profits.
Other than that, New Knights would be nice, oh and typically my eldest lad just confessed to me the other day he really likes Orcs and Goblins. Like I needed an excuse to pick one up.

Why not redo the O&G book?
They have been pushing for a "We're not releasing it until we're happy with it" mentality of late, and it's not unreasonable to think that Wood Elves, Bretonnians, or Dwarfs might see releases pushed back to be 'edition proofed' rather than what we see now where a few changes to mechanics make an army unplayable outside of certain builds.

Aww I was hoping the starter would have Wood Elves and Brets.

Can't wait for 8th to die, hope they reboot the rules significantly. Emp vs Orcs and a RavHordes style book does sound like they are starting from scratch...

I am a 6th Edition man myself, so I mostly look at this as a good way to get more miniatures... and resized goblins and new Empire troops are both things I would like to see.

God, GW really, really want to kill the idea of people just buying the small rulebook off eBay instead of buying the hilariously expensive hardback one.
'Tis a shame, I really don't think I'll be continuing fantasy with 9th, and lack of cheap rules to let me test the game before really investing is what stopped me moving onto 6th ed of 40k.

Fafnir wrote:Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

To be honest, an amazing (and i mean tournament oriented, consistent and balanced edition) rule book not withstanding, considering this appears to be a terrible beginners set, combined with the sure to come price hikes, this could be the final nail on Fantasy´s coffin.
