So this was my first really big tournament. I wasn't to scared though, I'm pretty calm under pressure. But i was excited to pit myself against some of the best in the country.

My list:

Shadowsun (Warlord)

3x Suits 2x w/ 2xplasma and TL, 1x mss/c&C/DC all 6 marker drones

Riptide Ion, Melta, EWO, Veltrack

10x Kroot sniper hound

10x Kroot sniper hound

10x Kroot sniper hound

Skyray BSF

Skyray BSF

3x Broadsides HYMPs EWO

Bastion Lascannon

Farseer Jetbike, Singing Spear, Runes of Warding

3x Windrider jebikes

3x Windrider jebikes

10 Warpspiders, exarch spinnert fastshot

My list is designed to be able to win in the deployment phase. Allows me to go 2nd and have great chances not giving up first blood.

Pre-tournament comment: The terrain was great, but also not very shooting friendly. Which is good. A lot of hill were big enough to totally block units like crisis suits and warpspiders. And there was a good amount as well. Did not particularly like fake skyshield landing pads. Too much LOS block with the bottom support columns.

If I don't mention nightfighting or mysterious terrain/objectives, it's because they had no impact on that game. Opponents list are based on memory, they are fairly accurate.

Game 1: Crusade Dawn of War
Nightfighting-yes

Taudar

Support CMDR: mss, C&C, VT, Iridium Armor, FNP

Riptide Ion, Melta, EWO, Veltrack

Riptide Ion, Melta, EWO, Veltrack

10x Kroot hound

15x Kroot sniper hound

15x Kroot sniper hound

12x Firewarrior

6x Pathfinders

3x Broadsides TLs, 6x Markerdrones

Farseer Jetbike

3x GJB

3x GJB

Summary:He went first. Only made it through 4 turns due to his slow play style. Basically he targeted my skyrays early and managed to kill one for first blood. I deployed well and his broadsides never got to shoot and he never hit anything important with markerlights. I managed to kill of some of his infantry and broadsides. Actually killed both riptides, but failed to kill the missile drones that were being tanked for by the support commander. So didn't get credit for them. Barely missed killing his wraithknight (Thought they had 5 wounds...) Sadly won 3-2 (only lost my riptide and a skyray. But only killed kroot, pathfinders and broadsides with First blood and linebreaker cancelling out.

Win 3-2

Game 2 Relic Vanguard Strike

Dark Angels / UltraMarines

DA Libby bike lvl 1 power field gen

Command squad 4x melta banner of devestation apothocary

10x Tactical squad Melta/multi-melta

5x Scouts shotguns camocloaks

LRC Dozer, MM, SB, EA

LRC Dozer, MM, SB, EA

LRC Dozer, MM, SB, EA

Tigerious

5x Scouts shotguns camocloaks

3x Centurions Gravcannon/Amp, Bolters

Game Summary: He won the die rolled, but I managed to seize. I placed by bastion centered and close to the objective, blocking the only landraider size whole on my side of the table. I'm glad I took the risk and placed my jetbikes within 12" of the relic. (they were going to get killed turn 1, but it thought it was worth the risk. I managed to grab the relic and move it 12" on turn 1 and 2, placing it behind a hill, out of LOS. You'd think this would make it a solid win right. 10-12 Powerfield/forwarning 4+ saves on Landraiders later...... This game should have been a loss for me after all those saves. I had landraiders in places that I didn't know landraiders could fit. Finally luck paid off, the lascannon on the bastion killed his command squad landraider and the warpspiders quickly sent all those marines packing. The tactical marine landraider was hull pointed by my riptide in combat and then my riptide was held up by 10 marines (combat squaded) for the rest of the game. His third landraider got immobilized pretty far up the field, and I blocked it's LOS with a skyray body. His centurions didn't kill much, but tanked for the Libbies for a long time, but my broadsides hiding in my bastion, wore down those save with all the wounds I caused and eventually was able to kill everything in that unit (including tigerious with precognition) Only game in which Shadowsun dies. =(

Win 5-2

Game 3 Scouring hammer and Anvil

Grey Knights

Coteaz

Techmarine rad/psycho

Techmarine rad/psycho

Henchmen: 2x crusader 5x DCA

Henchmen: 2x crusader 5x DCA

Henchmen: 3x Servitor w/ plasma 5x warrior

Henchmen: 3x warrior

6x GKS 1x psycannon

Stormraven MM, LC

Stormraven MM, LC

LRC MM Psybolts

LRR MM

Psyflemen

Game Summary: I win the roll, and make him go first. (Not letting coteaz seize on me) Objectives are placed pretty much in our own deployment zones (my third is a little father forward). He places the landraiders far forward and coteaz and his plasma squad hid out of LOS near another objective. I placed my bastion at the 24" edge and put my broadside on top, with a unit of kroot inside. My opponent see his objectives (3/2/3) and mine (1/4/2) and decides to try to turtle me and force me to come to him. Might work, except I have 2nd and I have linebreaker/objective contesters (Jetbikes). The game goes back and forth with no kills of the first 3 turns. (He made some 6-7 jink saves that game) I eventually got a stormraven down for first blood and an extra point (fast attack choice) and that was the game. he didn't manage to kill anything but the skyrays I put out in the open to draw his attention 9after throwing all my missiles at the stormravens)

Win 9-8

Game 4 Emperor's Will Vanguard Strike

Crons/CSM

Destroyer lord weave, mss, scythe

6x Wraiths

6x Wraiths

6x Wraiths

5x warrior Night scythe

5x warrior Night scythe

5x warrior Night scythe

3x Annihilation barge

Sorc Lord lvl 1

10x Cultists with serg

1x Helldrake flamer

This was the spammy list of the tournament for me. I won the die roll and attempted to go first. Setup with the idea that I was going to use my warpspiders with forwarning to block my riptide and crisis team. Skyrays blow their missiles early and broadsides hide on top of the bastion. Shadowsun starts with crisis team, but joins warpspiders soon after. My opponent seizes on me. Crap on a cracker. His army fly forward, no run roll less then 4. but he doesn't mange to kill anything with his barges on turn one due to moving and pretty much shooting at 2+ saves and av13. (crisis team was in area terrain with shadowsun, lost one drone) My turn one I throw all my fire power into wraiths, except my skyrays shoot at two different barges. I rolled well he rolled well too, and I managed to glance one twice and pen another for a bottom weapon destruction. Dropped 6-7 wraiths that turn. Things are looking ok. Two scythes and the helldrake come in. He's scared of my anti-air and fly from corners and stay in his far backfield out of range of everything except lascannon and riptide. I only shoot the lascannon. Fails to hit. His wraiths and destroy lord hit the bastion and kill it. The broadsides leap down and pass all their impact tests. 4+ whew! 2 wraiths charge my crisis team on the far right, one dies on overwatch. The leads to 2 round of combat, but the crisis team takes the last wound of the last wraith. My turn I managed to shoot my broadsides and wraith, as well as most of my spiders and even a riptide template (that scatters and hits one wraith, but kills it) I fly my first squad of bikes to a hill on my side of the table, far away from any of his stuff and my kroot to outflank near his cultists and sorc (who've been hiding in back near his objective the whole game) At this point their is the destroyer lord with two wounds left and a full squad of wraiths. He flys his helldrake over to deal with the kroot. The wraiths and destroyer lord jump over to assault my spiders (who failed to have forwarning) he assaults, and I cause one wound to a wraith. In combat things are different. My farseer fights a challenge with the lord. Passes MSS, and causes two wounds with the spear, which he fails both armor saves. Lord gets up at end of assault. Warpspiders cause one wound, and wriaths only cause one would, I win combat and use Hit and Run. next turn all the wraith are dead from shooting. Lord dies to shooting, and then gets up again. Game goes to turn 4, where he shot dead the kroot holding my objective and the other kroot are outside of 3" had gone to ground (big mistake on my part) my bikes going for this cultist objective are died keeping the drake occupied on the far side of the table. So I bring on my last bike squad and attempt to take my own objective. Having to deal with a destroyer lord, and 2 5 man warrior squads. Due to an amazing 6+ double save, his last warrior lives through the shooting phase, making the assault on his destroyer lord from my farseer/shadowsun unit meaningless. With only one would left, I had a good chance to kill him between the riptide and farseer, but that damned warrior and his double 6 saves won him the game. This was an amazing game and a great person to play against. Very tough list.

Lost 4-2

Day one record: 3-1 but low points scores. Earns me a bracket 4 for day 2. My necron opponent went to bracket 1 and played opponents which I'm fairly sure I could have defeated and made top table. But it was not meant to be.

Game 5 Crusade Hammer and Anvil

Farsight Cadre

Ethereal

Riptide Ion, Melta, EWO, Veltrack

Riptide Ion, Melta, EWO, Veltrack Earth caste array

3x Suits plasma/missile 6x shield drones

3x suits 2x missile 6x shield drones

3x suits 2x missile 6x shield drones

10x kroot, hound

10x kroot, hound

8x pathfinders

Sniper Drone squad, max size

ADL quad

Farseer

5x rangers

This was a game I wasn't looking forward to. I played this guy at my local qualifier and beat him, just barely but we both qualified for the event. I knew he played a static Tau gunline (despite having suits, they don't move much), and I had brought a more mobile force. I won the right to place 3 objectives, and forced him to come to me. But he went first. I deployed my bastion far forward knowing he couldn't deal with it.I won this game in the deployment phase. He was only able to shoot two riptides at me with no marker support. and one unit of missiles. I did roll bad and got 3 wounds on my riptide. But then on my shooting phase he lost his farseer/sniper squad/pathfinders/rangers and had a unit of suits falling back. He was not a good sport and said he wasn't feeling well and conceded the game after his 2nd turn caused no wounds. We determined that I would have gotten linebreaker with my bikes (after rolling to see if the game would have ended on turn 5)

Win 11-3

Game 6 Big Guns Never Tire Dawn of War

Screamerstar

Fateweaver

2x hearld of tzeech disks 2x greaters lvl 3

1x hearld of tzeech 2x greaters lvl 2

15x horrors

15x horrors

9x screamers

DP of tzeech 2x exalted lvl 3

DP of tzeech 2x exalted lvl 3

Never played against this list before. But did a lot of home work before the tournament. Felt like I was ready to give it a run for his money. he showed up to the table, just as time was starting, so we did get any pre-game stuff done until after time started. between his rolling and having to telling em abilities (BTW, he started rolling and writing stuff down were I couldn't even see the dice, I made him start over) I wrote down what he got and were it was. Fate weaver got Hemorage, Precognition, Pyro Primaris flame breath, and Shriek. His Daemon that looked like the LoC got 4+ FnP, reroll inv saves, Shriek, Invis, Warpspeed. His Khorne looking prince got 4+ FnP, Flesh/armor bane, Puppet master, shriek, dominator. Heralds had (disk 1: grimoire, precognition, forewarning, tzeech primaris) (disk 2: portaglyph, prescience, scryer's gaze, teezch primaris ) (foot:s6 teezch shooting, primaris teezch, and something useless)

I got forewarning, precognition and shriek.

He won the roll to go first. Crap. I put my bastion on the far left near the solo objective on that side of the table. I deployed near one objectives, but far away from where 4 of the objectives were. Wanted to force him to fight away from all the objectives. It worked. He fly across the table on turn one and kills on warp spider with shriek. Fate weaver flys off. Drops portaglyph in middle of table, no spawn. I fire my whole army at the DP I can see. He roll amazing and I get one wound on him. (really?) I jetpack my warpspiders(they had both the farseer and shadowsun with them) back to protect my crisis team, bastion, and skyrays. He brings in 15 horros near an objective in the middle of the talbe, I intercept with riptide and broadsides. (The judges only let me fire one weapons with interceptor, I disagree with this judgement since they have no rules backing their decision and I had two supporting mine)He shooting everything at my warpspiders, between DtW and precognition I tank all the wounds. he puppet masters one of my broadsides, shoots my skyray in side armor rolls like a boss and blows it up for first blood. He also spawn 3 daemonettes. He combi-charges my spiders and crisis team (I mis measured) I actually get one would through on the screamers. I use my farseer to tank all the wound (He attempts to use normally attacks on the spider unit, and melta attack on the crisis team. He causes 2 wound to the crisis team, killing a drone and one on a suit. I pass my morale checks and hit and run. I run 11" and i run toward his troops that came in hear his objective. I bring in a unit of kroot near an objective in the opposite corner, nothing else comes in. I slaughter the horros to one man. My crisis team die in combat. My skyray runs away hoping to hold the objective later in the game. I kill the portaglyph. His last turn (Yes we only got to 3 after his long pregame period and his slow turns. He was slow playing a little) he rolls a 12 on the stormtable and get free troops on an objective (Crap!) he also brought in more horrors to another objective and one of his DPs are on a 3rd. He attempts to shoot/assault my warpspiders again to similar results (Those guys are so tough) I did fail my morale check, but was not caught and rallied toward his objective to contest. I roll my reserves and get jetbikes, but don't get either kroot unit. I attempt to use my riptide to move run and contest his other objective. rolled a total of 9 on 5d6. I didn't make it. Use jetbikes to contest one objective. I own one with a skyrays. So the game ends with each of use having one objective, but he has first blood and we both have linebreaker. If either kroot unit had come in I would have won the game.......

Loss 5-3 I hated this game, and can't believe we only went 3 turns. I had two of the games go 6 turns on day 1. Sigh. Well he lost to another screamer star in the next round, so i guess he got what he deserved. I hope GW FAQs that list. Such a boring game.

Game 7 Scouring Vanguard Strike

My opponent was playing White Scars, with no grav-rifles. I didn't actually get to play, he conceded the game before we eve setup. Ihe had seen my last two games and decided it was a lost effort)

Win!

MVPs of the tournament: I probably didn't mention them enough in the summaries. But my Warpspiders lost a total of 5 models during the whole tournament, and killed 9 units, including 2 riptides.

Runner up: Jetbikes. Won me two games by themselves.

Unit I won't take again: Honestly, I should have put missiles on my crisis team instead of plasma. They didn't accomplish much with their plasma, but at least the marker drones performed well enough. I loved having shadow sun, but maybe next time I bring a commander and throw him in the squad instead. Maybe. Shadowsun with the warpspiders was amazing. I'll have to think on it.

broadsides hiding in my bastion,

Really?

And game 7 really!, thats a really poor showing giving up before the game even started you paid to go to a tourny not to win a game before it even starts!.

Screamer stars are tough and it may be no fun for you to play against but nor is playing against gun lines with daemons so hate the game not the player .

Thanks for the write up

The broadsides in the bastion worked amazing thoughout the tourney that was filled with markerlights and riptide who would just drop a template on them and kill them all very easy. It also was an amazing LOS blocker for my units, and provided some nice anti-air to boot.

Yes. You played an amazing game. I wish those rolls near the end had worked out for me. That last warrior....... just wouldn't die!
