I've got a tournament coming up in a few weeks and need to get painting (probably buying as well) hoping to test a list out this Thursday.
I don't want to be ultra competitive or anything, don't think the tournament is too competitive although there will almost certainly be some tough lists out there. I'm looking for a fairly balanced list without having to buy too much in the short term. I've gone BA allies, i'm not really sure why now, the original idea was because I like Death Company so much. But i've ditched them because them in a Land Raider is way expensive.

Anyway, the list:

Primary detachment:

Chapter tactics: Ultramarines.

HQ:
Tigurius 165

Elites:
Sternguard x8 (4x Combi-Melta) w/Drop Pod- 283
Sternguard x8 (4x Combi-Plasma) w/Drop Pod- 283

Troops:
Scouts (Camo Cloaks, 4x Sniper, 1x ML) 84
Tactical Squad (1 LC, 1 MG) 170

Heavy:
Devastator Squad (MLx4) 130
Thunderfire Cannon 100

Allied detachment:

HQ:
Librarian (Jump Pack) 125

Elite:
Furioso (Frag Cannon) W/Drop Pod 160

Troops:
Assault Squad (Flamer x2, Hand Flamer) 215
Assault Squad (Flamer x2, Hand Flamer) 215

That comes to 1930, so 70 points spare.
3 Drop Pods is all I can really do at the moment unfortunately. I was thinking about just using a normal Dread and taking a jump pack Sang Priest in the BA elite.
But I don't really know if this list is actually going to work at all, or if I just re-work it and fit in my beloved Death Company!!
Any assistance would be great.

Not a fan of Dreads in 6th, too easy to kill, contemptors on the other hand...

If you have the points I'd add in another melta to the Sternguard, that pushes it up to nearly 2.5 HP vs. av14 without any rerolls from chapter tactics.

Are you combat squading the tactical with LC and MG?

What you doing about flyers?

I do want a Contemptor, or two or three
But I like Dreads, I know they have downfalls, and are rarely going to get their points cost back in enemies killed, but they force a unit or two to focus on them. They, and the pod can get in the way of a heavy weapon squad or vehicle. I know drop pods do that without Dreads in, but i've got a Dread and I like them.

Doesn't mean I wouldn't consider not taking one, but at the moment with what i've got and what I can get its probably a pretty decent option.

Yeah wasn't sure about the Sternguard load out, would require play testing on my part I just did 4 because its half the squad.

As for the tactical, it'll depend. I've used a 10 Man Tactical squad (a while ago, in 5th I think) with BA with a Sang Priest and had them in cover, by an objective and the long range and short range worked, when there was nothing near its an extra LC shot from objective campers, when something gets close you've got bolters and a melta. Probably not optimised, but its worked for me in the past.

I've never really had to deal with many flyers, and when I have i've lost badly. Have only ever faced 4+ flyers, Necrons and IG. So don't have experience actually dealing with them properly.

The old standby of Aegis and Quad Gun or invest in flack missiles for your dev squad for the flyers? Or even both if you think you'll have a lot of flyers? Quad Gun is tough to beat with skyfire and interceptor.

What about a command squad in a pod instead of the Dread in the pod? 4 lots of plasma or 4 grav? Could combine it with a couple of storm shields for the unit.

I'm not a fan of mixing up a units target priorities unless it has split fire, you end up wasting early turns were you can't shoot at stuff thats out of range or turns not being able to move trying to get in range. One LC isn't enough in my book, you'd want a couple at least to pose enough of a threat. For your list I'd just take another ML, save the points.

Want that furioso to be anti tank/squadron, then stick a magna grapple on him and retain the melta gun. Want anti troop, then replace melta gun with a heavy flamer. Either will make him more effective at his role. 10/15pts respectively.

Was thinking about a defence line, very useful. Hadn't considered command squad, will look into it.

As for the tactical squad, I don't see it as mixing up target priorities, but a durable objective holder with an added long range shot, just incase. Of course it's a 20 point just incase, but still...

Good idea, will definitely consider that, depending on how I finish the lost off.
