Hey guys

This is a question that crops up tons in the 40k community and I was wondering how it apply's here.

Do you make your x-wing/attack wing lists to be most brutally effective or follow the net recommendations?

Or do you theme them around a particular squadron or battle?

ORRR do you just pick whatever you like for fun?

I personally fit into the 2nd two categories although I do still look for what works well together.

From what I can tell, just being new, people online seems to amount the game to 'spam the same ship multiple times' which is rather disappointing. Everything seems to always be, "oh 2 yt1300s, or 8 TIE Fighters or 4 HWK's."

I personally am more interested in seeing what scenario play there can be. For example, I'm now wondering if when Deadzone comes out, can the terrain be repurposed for something like the attack on the Death Star 2....

Personally, for me as a total newbie, my decisions currently amount to, 'what makes up points and doesn't take 2 months to be delivered.'

So I'm fielding some truly awful lists at the moment...

I usually field something different every game. Some choices hang around for a bit, but after a few games they get rotated out. For example, I haven't used my YT1300 for coming on two months now I think. Should probably break it out again, still not used Han...

I like running theme lists, I have a decent sized collection of Imperials(nothing large enough to brag about), but I really try to make lists that use different ships so that I can use the ones I have.

I got lucky and one of the stores in town had a bunch of x-wing and tie fighters so I bought several of each. I have(or have on order) every imperial ship currently made, so I can have variety in my lists even if I don't use them often.

I am working on a list to run my fire spray and shuttle in the same 100 point list just because(it will probably lose)

I run what I like, really. I couldn't give a crap about netlists, as I think most people will do well with what works for them: the best list in the hands of somebody who doesn't know how to use it will lose. Meanwhile the best player can do extremely well with a bad list if he knows to use all the tools at his/her disposal.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Currently both I play the Luke/Red5 Wedge/ Red2 and Biggs Red-3?. Its fluffy and for fun games we've been only playing enough poits for them and maybe a single droid or special cards. At events it tends to be about 10-15 points more and the I lay on the droids and special cards.

Currently, I'm running lists that's just with what I've got (3 Rebel Ships + 5 Imperial Ships).

I like to run Luke + a Blue Squadron B-Wing + Biggs, making Biggs into a tank, using the B-Wing to stun a high-priority ship and then letting the X-wings rip into it.

For Imperials, I'm just running Vader + 4 TIE Fighters of varying cost until I can get my hands on some more ships.

I tend to just run whatever I feel like. When I first started with wargaming (primarily 40k) I used to always poke around the internet for lists/list ideas. Now I just try to come up with a list that has synergy and would be fun to play.

I used to read Star Wars books constantly, but I think I've only read 2 in the last 8 years or so (and I think one of those was a re-read). Thus, I'm pretty hazy on a "fluffy" list other than pulling something from one of the movies.

I am interested in fielding ships that I like. I guess I could say that I spam TIE fighters, but that's kind of the thematic point of TIE's. I usually leave room for supporting tactics by other Imperial ships, though. Heck, the first individual ship I bought was a TIE Advanced.

My Rebels are the same way. I field the ships that are my favorites, and damn the meta if they aren't the best ones that I could be possibly be fielding. Some of my favorite ships right now are my Z-95 conversions I field with some home-brew stats from Boardgamegeek, just because of the fond memories of them from Xwing vs. TIE Fighter on the PC way back when. And they are basically the Rebel answer to the TIE fighter when if comes to cheap/underpowered ships.

Is anyone else slightly scared that 'X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter' can be classed as 'way back when?'

I remember that! It was the best flight arcade shooter of all time.

OF ALL TIME!

But yeah. That IS kinda scary though.

My opinion of X-Wing V TIE Fighter has always been it was a terrible, badly thought out attempt at an almost exclusively multiplayer online game (with required joystick, FFS), before the infrastructure for it was even remotely ready. - You were still paying by the minute to be online!

The game was only partially redeemed by the 'Balance of Power' campaign pack. Partially.

No. TIE Fighter, and X Wing before it are where it's at. - And the source of my surprise that people think the 3rd in the series is 'way back when.'

Plus, quite simply. you wouldn't disagree with Grand Admiral Thrawn, would you?

Just listen to that MIDI Imperial March.

I own both sets, and people play with only my stuff so the lists tend to be pretty equal.

I don't have the big ships though, so lists with those are avoided because of that. (I do want a heavy laser for my B Wing though...)

Don't know anyone who considers 4 HWK's a good list...

But 8 Tie Fighters is not only effective, won the nationals, it's also very fluffy because that's is exactly how the Tie/ln's were intended to be used. They were cheap and easily replaced ships, so throw a ton of them at the target and if you lose half not a big deal.

The 2nd most common list would be HSF, which is Han and 2 X-Wings.

Most people don't just throw 3+ of a ship together because of lack of better ideas. The ships quite often simply work better if there's 3-4 or more of them together. Doing so is also very thematic because that's how they operated in the movies and other stories. Squads of X-Wings flying together.

The infrastructure was there to play it online. I played a lot of XvT back in the day and although the lag was a factor it was hardly unplayable. Also not sure where you were back then, but no one I knew still payed by the minute to be online.

I really like making a theme to a list and trying to stick with it and see what comes from it. It makes list building more fun for me(and I actually really like list building, I sometimes do 30+ versions of my 40k lists just to see what comes out)

I'm not familiar enough with Star Wars to make a themed list. such as this is Squad X from some famous battle.

I mostly play with friends who are noobs, so I go for a simple list without a lot of toys. Although I recently played against a new person who brought out a 2xB-Wing/HCL + HWK-290 list, so I'll be working on an Imperial response to that.

If I ever attend a tournament I'll bring the most powerful list I can come up with, short of TIE swarm. I'm not fast enough to control 7 or 8 ships in an 1.25hr.

Not even necessarily a list based on a movie or fluff, just pick an idea to build your list around, like one of my recent ones is a suicide shuttle list, the main piece is a shuttle with vader and a heavy laser cannon(and a few other upgrades), and then some other ships to chip away shields for me and buff the shuttle.

100% of the time, I play for what I think is going to be the most fun. The other night, I flew a B/X/HWK list against a player who decided to follow the formation flying TIE Wing configuration. Had I made smarter moves, I would have given him a serious run for his money.

Thinking about it, my buddy and I regularly put together lists that just seem to be fun or slightly themely.

I usually pass on the falcon because I find a 360 degree firing arc boring. But I also don't think that the options are mutually exclusive. Trying to keep biggs in formation with something is always fun.

I play what I think will be fun, with the occaisonal net-list. I play so rarely that I don't get much more success out of the latter than the former.

I'm trying to come up with a list that I enjoy enough to play for several games in a row, but it's hard with so many different options available.
