What are peoples thoughts on the quality of Star Trek Attack Wing Miniatures?
The game itself is very good, a slightly more indepth version of x-wing
I know the models are basically the Wizkid Heroclix stuck on x-wing bases but still for the price one would expect a little better.
The starter set I purchased was "ok" but the expansions are awful paint wise.
I was in my local games store and saw the newly released Defiant Model. The paintwork on it was actually WORSE than the Defiant heroclix model I have.

Hmm.. depend show you want to break it down.
The paint job the models come with is absolutely terrible. No question there.
The quality of the models.. not amazing. they're pretty rough and ready, they're pretty roughly cut off the sprue and there's mold lines to be seen on several of them.
However, the level of detail is actually not as bad as i first thought. Having painted up a couple of the klingon ships and the galor and breen ships, the terrible paint job does hide a lot of the detail. If you have the will to replace that and paint (and wash) them yourself then you can end up with some not too bad looking ships.
The upside of painting these vs painting say a 40k army is that your normal attack wing fleet isn't going to have more than 4 ships in it, so it's actually pretty quick to get it done.

Honestly, the paint job is the biggest detracting factor for me. While you can repaint them yourself, I have a backlog of stuff to paint and don't need to add another game where I'm embarrassed to field the models as they are currently painted and don't have time to paint them before putting them on the table. I'd rather they were boring grey, rather than the God-awful paint job they possess. Plus my friend has everything that's been put out so far, so I'll just play at his house next time I head back to my old town if I want.

Don't have any of mine really finished yet, but here's a couple of colour tests.. tho the vor'cha is quite obviously not washed yet.

Here's a couple of random other people's finished paint jobs if anyone's curious of what you can actually get out of these minis.

klings and roms by a guys called minionmagic and the enterpirse by a bloke called rob1613.
You can get them to a decent enough standard pretty quickly. Even if you do just change the base colour, do a few details and then wash them then they'll look a LOT better. If you want to dry brush, highlight etc then go for it, but getting them out of the 'embarrassed to put them on the table' state is quick and easy and satisfying as you're done with our entire fleet in a few hours.

looks much nicer with the fresh changes to be honest!
I may give it a go myself
however like timetowaste the paintjob is probably the biggest factor for me too.
If I didnt love trek so much I wouldnt have touched them.
Fantasy Flight also put them to shame in terms of quality. Wizkids really should be learning lessons from this instead of trying to use the same models for 3 different game systems to save money!

I have no issues with the quality of the minis. Sure, the paint jobs are weak, but being a fellow Dakkaite, my painting skills are good enough that I can repaint the ships however I want. My really small pens have been seeing a workout on these.
I've attached pics of my painted ships. I'm currently working on a repaint of the Defiant, and then am going to start on the rest of my ships.

I'm not thrilled with the paint scheme. They could have kept it basic like they did with the Fleet Captain game. The bad paint is why it's not catching as fast as X-Wing did with my FLGS crowd; even though we have far more Star Trek fans than Star Wars (amazing I know, but it is an older crowd).
Oh well, its just another good excuse to break out the paints.

That sounds so disappointing; I was disappointed with the Ferengi Marauder's paint and that was a tournament piece.

The paintjob is probably the #1 reason why I haven't picked up Star Trek attack wing, that and I'm a bigger Star Wars fan than I am Star Trek fan... It just looks like gak when compared to an x-wing model...

They really should be charging 1-2 pounds less than the x-wing models (uk currency) if they wanted to recycle the heroclix/fleet captains models with just a bad paintjob to be honest.
It would not take them much to bring them up to at least a decent standard (and while I understand repainting is easily possible - and I am considering it - I dont believe one should be forced to, when paying for a premium ready painted product)
A friend of mine works for them and (pinch of salt) apparently a memo was wondering why it wasnt as popular as x-wing...I think the reason is pretty obvious.
It annoys me slightly as like Pound Puppy's club members me and my friends are very big Star Trek fans and due to this issue only me and one other have picked it up at all. (the rest went with just x-wing)
- oh further to the above! the actual game is pretty darn good! the way one builds fleets, uses captains etc is great which makes me a little huffy as so many people get put off by the model quality assuming the game will be poo too!
- Final appended post (as Ive been doing some reading!) - Do you guys reckon a simple dip or coat of armour or dark wash would instantly improve the look of the models?

Did you just to a grey drybrush over the Ent-D? I find trying to make a clean looking paint job on it looks bad, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to drybrush or not... lol

I did a wash and then painted in the panels. Didn't take long. I just washed over the existing paint job. No need to strip them down.

I'm staying away from Attack Wing because of the shoddy quality of the models. The D-7/K't'inga mini is a prime example of WizKids not caring how their models look and I'm not talking just about paint jobs. The bridge on top of the boom section is rotated 90 degrees clockwise and there is no torpedo launcher on the bow of the mini:
I would replace the WizKids figure with the one from the Star Fleet Battles series of miniatures. I'd also do the same for the "charm bracelet" TOS Enterprise.
