I would assume this belongs more in the 40k General but I feel like the best people to answer this question is in the Proposed Rules forums.

Has anyone actually walked into a FLGC and met someone using one?

I assume a lot of people just play them with close groups of friends.

I can understand why people like to create new units and fandex but does anyone actually play(test) them?
I am asking because I love scribbling down notes and imagining New Units and Armies.

But after reading some attempts get burned I am hesitant to post.
eg. World Eaters Supp: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/558353.page
I personally felt this was extremely well thought out for a themed Army Supplement but in the first reply, he got flamed for not making it OP enough rather then Fluffy.

So what are everyone's thoughts and experiences?

Hoping to contribute more to the Dakkadakka community.

We use lots of homebrewed stuff in my gaming club, but all I can say is that homebrewing is hard. The creating process is the easiest part, but balancing your product so it will be something you originally wanted and actually fun to play could be brutal.

As a base guideline, I would say that first you should make your fan-made stuff as OP as possible then simplify and streamline it down to its core, cost it accordingly, add 25% to its cost then post it here.

As the user who supposedly "flamed" (and if you think thats what flaming looks like then you are in for a lot of surprises, haha) I would like to counter your assertions.

First of all, it was not as much "fluffy" as it was completely lazy. Though to the OPs credit at least it felt like an actual supplement that way. I thought it was a dumb supplement because it did nothing to alleviate any problems that people were having with the mark of khorne or world eaters players in general.

I merely want a viable book, not some thoughtless garbage. As Andy Chambers once noted, there's nothing wrong with wanting both a fluffy and competitive book and army. You would be wise to subscribe to that line of thinking because people play this game for more than one reason.

We have been using homebrew characters in our gaming group and they have been quite fun to use and resonably balanced. There is one guy that uses a homebrew codex for his thousand sons, it is mostly some special wargear and some boosts to existing units, I haven't played against him myself but no one has ragequitted against him so it seems to work just fine.

My armies:
vior'la sept 12k
Erik Morkai's great company 6k
dark mechanicus, the dearth of hope, 8k
rothwyr morwan's company 1,5k
Adeptus custodes 2k
AoS, The forgotten order, SE, 3k

I played against this one guy with homebrew units several times. He had 'deathwatch' bikers with 2+/3++, 2Ws and Str 9 AP 2 lances that hit at initiative and could also fire TL Lascannons. I was told that they were 100 points each and I mauled the rest of his army but it still left a bad taste in my mouth.

90%+ of my games involve custom units, heroes, scenarios, rule changes etc. That percentage is still too low in my opinion.

Brilliant. You should have told him that your HQ was actually a homebrewed character who gave the entire army Feel No Pain and made everything twin-linked.

I tend to stay away from topics that gets heated so my understanding of flaming is not that good..

The Fan supp definitely was not detailed as some (completed) Fandex but was a draft, as I view it, to get the basics out of the way before creating Units and Characters..
But we will leave that discussion to that Thread.

So most homebrewed rules are for Campaign/Story purpose?

I should have added one more Poll "I have created one"

Anyone care to link their own created one? Would be happy to start a list of link in the first post.

I still like my homebrew chapter master felix strausse.

basic CM profile with a suped up iron halo (3++), a lightning claw, and the Blazing Gauntlet (MC lightning claw that had a once per game st7 ap2 flamer). Ran him at 190pts i think.

I use JustDave's Chaos & ask Codecies.
However I rarely play 40k, and never competitively.
Much prefer RPGs where nearly the entire thing is homebrew!

I am always willing to entertain new units people wish to try in games like Apocalypse. However in regular games of 40k I am less likely to allow them to be used. Just personal opinion, I go into Apoc games expecting things to die in droves and unique and over the top scenarios to happen.
