Has anyone read anything put out by Skull Island eXpeditions yet? Any reviews/recommendations?

I've read them. They are on par with most of the Black Library stuff (some of Dan Abnett's work aside as that's just a whole different level).

The first few are novella sized and they could have been done much better with more pages. You can tell that the writers felt constrained by the word count. The last two are whole novels and are pretty darn good, in particular, "Into the Storm" written by Larry Correa of Monster Hunters Inc fame.

I've got a few reviews written Manchu. I'll link them In a bit.

They're on par with the Space marine battles stuff. Not bad. Not great. Entirely readable. They're not as good as most of the Horus heresy stuff however

@darefsky: That seems like good advice. I'll try one of the novels first.

@cincy: Thanks, I look forward to reading them! There are a couple of SMB novels that I really like (e.g., Legion of the Damned) so that sounds good to me. HH, meanwhile, has not been my cuppa since Prospero Burns.

I have read the whole Butcher novella, currently I am reading the called to battle 3-in-1 anthology and I´ve read all the excerpts.
If you are interested in the setting you will greatly enjoy the read. Quality wise you can easily compare skullislandx authors to the bl ones, they are on par with the good 40k authors.
Personally I can´t wait for more novels in the Iron Kingdoms!

I read the Taryn and Rutger novella that they gave away not too long ago and rather liked it. I haven't had a chance to pick up any of the others, but will eventually get around to it. The Butcher one looks the most interesting to me at the moment.

Finished up Dark Convergence a while back. Can't say it was an amazing work of literature but I enjoyed it. Kind of "literary junk food" I guess (although I don't really have a sophisticated taste in books, so if I thought it was just ok then other people probably think it's worse).

Good if you like either Nemo or convergence.

Was that a novella or novel?

They call it a novel, but it's an incredibly short novel. around 200 pages of words. I'm not sure how I feel about the length. I'm not a book critic but I feel like the plot they chose can't quite sustain a story of that length and they put in a lot of padding. Admittedly a lot of that padding is pretty cool battle description but it's still padding.
