I've heard that there was a league of sorts written in WD about four guys that each started a new army that they had nver played/owned/painted and set a certain period of time to complete a fully painted 500 point WYSIWYG army. They then played games with them and escalated it from there. I want to do this. Is there a breakdown of how it was organized anywhere on the net? All I find is a bunch of people talking about their lists but no information about the rules and setup of the league. I want to do it with 40K and would like to start with 500 and give everyone a month to play the games and paint up the next 250. Figure 500, 750, 1000, 1250, and 1500 would be a good way to go. If anyone can point me to a link that provides the setup info for the league I'd really appreciate it.

There are no hard and fast rules for it, you just get together with some mates and decide on a schedule. Eg:

Month 1- build+ paint a 500 point starter army (min HQ+1 troops). Game at end of month. 3 points for win, 1 points for a draw. 1 point for each unit completed within the limit.

Month 2- add 250 points of Elites/FA/HS (for example) and game, points as above.

and so on and so forth. You can run it for as long as you fancy, and really do whatever you want. Sometimes you might want to mix it up by playing a team game or a game that gives double points, just to add variety. I've also seen ones where people have spent a month doing a centrepiece model building objective markers, having a mini-tournament or anything really. The sky's the limit.

So basically, go on and set one up, and I hope you enjoy it. I wish I could get my own gaming group to do something similar, it sounds like great fun.

Between

The original Tale of Four Gamers gave each of the four Gamers a budget (I think it was about £50/month, but that was back in 1997). Their goal was a playable army in 6 months at that budget, with games between them waving the usual army selection rules for the sake of just using the models bought.

Paradigm has hit the nail on the head - there's not set formula and considering the varying amounts of money and time people have for the hobby and to game no single setup would suit all.

It's really a case of sitting down and working out what a good escalation of points would be for you and whoever wants to take part. Ideally you'll settle on a rough amount that you can play up to that everyone can fit into their time and budget.
