Hi Dakka,
So I was looking at some lists and a thought struck me... the synergy between Fuegan and a squad of Dire Avengers with a Simmershield Exarch in a Wave Serpent is pretty cool.
The DAs give Fuegan:
A 5++
Assault Grenades
Counter Attack
Fuegan gives the DAs:
Someone to tank damage
Fearless
LD10 for counter attack
Defense against MCs
A Melee beatstick
And as Fuegan has LD10 Split Fire, so it doesn't matter that he's a capable tank smasher in an anti-infantry squad, not to mention they share Battlefocus and an 18" range so they're going to both be in the midfield, and Bladestorm means the DAs are surprisingly effective vs TEQs too.
Now I know that the main drawback with all the Phoenix Lords is they cost a bomb, especially when Farseers give soooo much utility for their points, which keeps it from being a top-tier competitive choice, but still worth a go eh?
Anyone got any other 'wrong-or-non' Aspect and Phoenix Lord matchups that are surprisingly effective?

I've run him with DAs and he really is very effective. A nice synergy. Especially if you have an exarch who can accept challenges leaving him free to hit stuff. He's got a lot of varied utility, perhaps more than most of the other phoenix lords, I feel...

Counter attack doesn't transfer. re-read the USR.
But other than that, yes - DAs + PLs which don't have invulnerables are hilariously awesome.

I regularly run a squad with Fuegan + Eldrad and 7-8 warlocks. I stick Fuegan out front to take the shots, I've been lucky and have got fortune each time i've run this unit as well as at least one or two Destructor / Renewers. So on the few times when Fuegan does take a wound I let it buff him up to an extra str and toughness then heal the wound next round.
One game at the end of my turn three I had a Str & Toughness 7 Fuegan running around with one wound on him that I was going to heal the next round.

interesting. onyl problem is that the unit is
a) super expensive
b) foot slogging
c) wont put out a whole lot of damage, or at least not enough to justify there points.
as for fuegan in dire avengers, intersting idea, but done think its worth the points.

In higher point games, a buddy of mine used 10 scorpions with king pincher, kalandras or w.e the scorpion pl is.
Very independent unit that tipped the tide of a couple games, served as a very good 'tide breaker' as the infiltrate in front of the army.

It's not a cheap unit no but it's designed for my opponent to focus on cause it's big and scary and it's done that every game I've played them in. Even with them being footslogging I've always had them in CC with something by turn 3 which is the min on having them in a wave serpent as well. As for not putting out a whole lot of damage I'll disagree with you on that point any unit I've thrown them at has been just about handed their faces when I get them into CC I run 5 with spears so that's 5 St9 Ranged attacks and a Melta shot from Fuegan at a different target, it it presents itself, so that normally a dead transport. The thing that makes the unit so good is all the other powers loaded on top of it, the extra run distance for turn 1 / 2. Enhance for +1 WS and Int makes hitting most things on 3+ vs 4+. If I happen to get doom as well as all those attacks are wounding on 2+ rerollable. Weight of dice manys anyone fail saves.
