Can you guys give me some advice or suggestions on what a starter IG list should look like?

Definitely casual, at the stage I'm just looking to get started. So I guess it does just matter what theme I want, huh? Thanks for the perspective.

Are you looking for fully mechanized..Airborne..A foot slogging regiment with Artillery and Tank backup with Air Support ..A group of desert raiders..Drop Troops .Calvary..Walkers ..
Great thing about Imperial Guard is they can be all of these and more ..So what is your theme first and foremost for guard ..cause most themes for guard can be fun as well as competative ..if you are looking at casual gaming you really broaden the number of basic troops models a lot..as there ar eliterally dozones of companies producing basic infantry models out there of various quality and pricepoints..

If you're just starting out, get at least 3-4 boxes of guardsmen and a company command squad. You'll use them all with nearly any list you'd want to make with the codex

I started out by getting a Battle Force (though TBH that was back when the Sentinel was an LRBT) and a squad of Guardsmen. Gives you 40 bodies, and I converted the tank commander into a Platoon Officer.

It gives you a Company Command Squad, Infantry Platoon of two infantry squads and platoon command, 3 heavy weapon teams, and a Veteran squad with multiple special weapons.

I would say that the FW Cadian Hostile Environment SWS kits are huge money savers for getting plenty of special weapons, for £13.50 you get effectively an entire Vet squads worth of SW's, whereas otherwise you'd would have had to spend in the region of £45 on a trio of Command Squad kits.

After that, I bought a Vendetta (and then another one later) for AT and AA support, as well as delivering the Veterans via Grav Chutes to grab backboard enemy objectives and deploy danger close to enemy units with the Vets to annihilate them with concentrated fire and occasionally a demolition charge.

From there you can pretty much branch out to anything. You can do Air Cavalry, Infantry spam, I personally went on to make an Armoured Company and I don't regret it.

It's also very easy to convert your own special weapons from a regular box of guardsmen
