In the farsight enclave O'Vesa has gotten a lot of attention, and rightly so, while all the other commanders are regarded a pretty bad. They have a poor mix of weapons, support systems and no clear utility. But while looking threw the list one more time sub-commander torchstar caught my eye. She has two flamers, target lock, drone controller, two marker drones, Multi-Spectrum Sensor Suite, and Neuroweb System Jammer. While most people would want the multi-secrtrum suit, command and control node and pen chip on the same commander, the multi-spectrum sensor suite is probably the most important of those wargear. Adding torchstar to your O'vesa + riptide combo means you don't need to dip into tau empire for the buffing commander, you can instead ally with someone else, like Eldar and have a farseer on a bike give the unit guide/prescience and have other powers at your disposal. With a farseer attached to the death star you become all but immune to psychers, denying the witch on a 4 or 5 and getting 4 rolls to do it.

Another reason to bring sub-commander torchstar is to put in a unit of crisis suits equipped with missile pods, target locks and marker drones. Her drone controller will make your drones bs5 and her multi-sectrum suit will allow you to ignore cover with your 12 s7 ap4 shots. This will be good against skimmers and most non-marine infantry. Only real issue is her lack of iridium armor meaning the unit will be pretty squishy

Anyway, what do you guys think? Does torchstar have a place allowing you to either ally with non-tau allies or can she act as a second, weaker, buffing commander?

She might be interesting chucked into a squad of broadside as a second MSSS. interestingly enough you can also come in with Space marines Mantis? warriors for divination as well.

Yeah, I didn't even think of broadsides. A unit of torchstar, 3 broadsides w/ target lock and 6 marker drones seems like a great point of fire to protect the back field as you advance with your troops and riptides.

Broadsides get no marker drones i though. EDit nvm you can. thats not a bad back/mid field unit at all. with only a vindicare+ Icarus las being able to completely shut it off.

By sticking torchstar with broadsides... you effectively making a 154 point MSS... i suppose 2 good marker drones, but they don't have target lock so they will never benefit the broadsides. that's not a good return on investment.

If you were to do with the broadsides the same that most do with their mark'o's, Target Locks and marker drones all around, it could work, and the CCN isn't exactly needed in the build either, as everything is TLed, and torchstar has flamers. . . add to that that you are taking the eight in formation, which means you have a relentless broadside unit just sitting around. . .

I'm confused about this. Care to elaborate?

the poster thinks we are still in 6th, when eldar were BB. the Talisman of Arthas Moloch is what I think he was talking about. . . and I don't believe that tau are legal targets now for fortune & Guide.

That is correct. I read their post was like "Wait, what?". I'm just making sure I wasn't crazy.

Talisman is just one of those oddity relics. On paper is sounds amazing, moderate price for a bubble of 4+ deny the witch and +1 steal the init (5++ invul too).
But then you remember how psykers work this edition. Deny the witch bonuses only works if your unit is targeted by a spell and except for Ork Weirdboyz who the hell uses offensive powers these days? theyre too risky for how meh they are.

The poster doesn't just "think we are still in 6th"; this thread was necro'd from oct 2013.

And just for a stupid comment at that.
