My personal preference is for eldar. Super fast scoring units, psychic powers from the farseer provide the same sort of benefits as markerlights but with slightly greater reliability and less range issues, and things like dark reapers, support platforms, wraithguard, and well most of the eldar units can be used to good effect and buffed by a support commander if needed. The minimum point spend for them to be functional as allies is rather low as well, so there is not much reason not to take them if you don't have other allies in mind.

Similar thing applies to space marines to a certain extent, I could see a slightly less traditional list that puts some points into drop pod elements to provide back field disruption doing well. Once you go outside battle brothers it becomes a bit harder, but grey knights could be a decent pickup if you wanted some deep strike/infiltrate disruption, and rad grenades make up partly for the lost synergy potential. Orks used to be a decent choice to provide effectively kroot +1, and I could still see them used in much the same way as either an assault screen or as something to shove down your enemies throat to take pressure off your other units.

Personally, I like Imperial Guard as allies for my Tau, and for all the different flavors of Marines I play. I have a tendency to load up on small elite units that are a bit pricey, and that leaves me a bit light on scoring troops. My solution is to take a lot of bare bones infantry from the Guard and run them as PDF auxiliaries, conscripts, Gue'Vesa, or whatever I feel like. And if I feel like my army needs extra punch, I can always bring in an allied Manticore to literally level the playing field. The whole field, just level it.

Space Marines. I like the synergy as well as the ability to have units with a divergent focus. Battle Brothers doesn't hurt either.
