I've been getting together with some friends and playing once a week more or less and we're gearing up to do some sort of narrative campaign. To that end we're making up some special characters and trying them out. My friend made up his first one- a Dreadnought Chaplain character. Basically he added +1 WS, Character as a trait, a 6" Zealot bubble and a 4+ Rosarius invulnerable save. I figured we'd try it out and see how it flies, and I think it's far too strong or far too cheap as we ran it. He plays Iron Hands so the beast also has It Will Not Die. I spent at least a dozen multi melta and Exorcist shots at the damned thing and finally took it down turn four or five, but spent most of that time being forced to hit it with absolutely everything I had to almost no effect. My initial thoughts are that Character is not something that should be allowed on a Dreadnaught as nothing of strength 5 or less can even hurt it, and anything strong enough to do damage is going well after its init. 4 (power mauls notwithstanding). MC's can challenge, but they can be hurt with str 3 and up depending on their toughness, so I think that's fine. Also, the 4+ combined with IWND is just too resilient. Any thoughts on pricing or modifying the character are welcome. I'm thinking no Character trait and drop the Rosarius to either a 5+ or just once a game at 4+- otherwise I'm thinking it needs to be very pricey.

There already is a dreadnought chaplain rules writting in the forgeworld books. But if you dont want to use those, here would be a decent version.

WS 5 BS 5 St6 FA12 SA12 RA12 A4 I4 HP3

8" zealot bubble, extra armor, 5+ invun (rosarios only grants 4+ invun to smaller body, its too stretched out on a dread to grant that).

Dreadnought Crozius Str+2 AP2 concussive specialist weapon.
Power fist/w underslung heavy flamer

Bjorn the Fellhanded is a Character with AV 13 I think, so that requires Str 7 to even hurt him. Character on this guy is ok in my book.

What was the points cost of this dread? Its hard to comment on his fairness without that information. Also was it AV:12 or 13 as this makes a huge difference in their combat survivability.

Here's a link to a bunch of characters forgeworld released updates for last week: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/C/Charcterupdate.pdf

There are two unique dreadnoughs but neither of them have are characters and I agree that whilst fluffy it does make them more or less immune to damage in close combat especially if they have AV:13. Take a look at them and then work from their as they are a better starting template than Bjorn as he was designed for a different ruleset.

The 5+ invulnerable is also a better fit for vehicles in my opinion.

If I recall correctly the points value was only 180 or less- based on the very old rules from FW for the Chaplain. Armament is the same as the base Chaplain dread model, plus Character, Zealot bubble (rather a large improvement over just a personal reroll) and the 4+, in addition to being made an HQ. No Venerable, and AV 12. No drawbacks like Bjorn either though. Looks like in the low 200 range maybe? Just a chaplain dread and HB is like 180 points, Titus is 205... mostly I think the invulnerable save is crazy good, what should it be worth on a vehicle? DE pay 10, but on lighter (and open topped) vehicles topping at AV 11, for a 5+ invul. A Rosarius/invul is anywhere from 15 to twenty five depending on the army.

Stats wise his rear amour should be 10 as it is with all other dreads say 210 pts.

sallies all the way

"Into the fires of battle unto the anvil of war."
War-cry of the salamanders
"Vulkans fire beats in my breast with it I shall smite the foes of the Emperor."
war-cry of the firedrakes and chapter command

Looks like we're going to try 5++, Venerable and maybe something like Bjorn's Living Relic rule. Points to be determined.
