Hello Peeps,

This is my first attempt at a blog, having decided to follow the good advice of another Dakkanaught (is that a real term? sure I've heard it somewhere) to try and encourage me to actually finish something! Its only a small project, Khan and some bikes, to ally with my two Imperial armies (being guard, the 42 Arrakeen, and Marines, the Rainbow Warriors). But I would love to get it finished, particularly as I always get distracted and have never finished painting any sized force before. Love building and converting figures, but get very easily distracted when trying to paint.

The key aims of this project, are speed, and table quality, gonna try and overcome my tendency to spend ages on a single figure and get these guys into war and purging the alien in a decent amount of time.

Link to the thread (and Geezer) who inspired me to try a P&M blog http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/555215.page

This is all I have so far, if anyone has any advice, including a better way to take pics, then please chip in.

Wow, Badger, they look nice! I like your khan. Your customisation is awesome.

Also, the heads on some of the marines are nice. They SW bits? or 3rd party?

Cheers!
They are all GW I think, some of them might be chaos marauders? Came out of my bits box, which has been going for 25 years, they could be from anywhere really! A lot of the facial features were green stuff, as I wanted them all without helmets and looking individual.
Learned my first lesson in bike painting already today, it was silly to stick the riders to the bikes, making it all a lot harder!

Well you definately nailed the individuality aspect.

lol, I paint the bikes in 3 seperate pieces. I have the bike, the rider and the bolters. I then put them together at the end when its all painted. I cant imagine how much of a PITA it must be to paint it all as one.

This is my first attempt at white. Three thin layers of skull white over a nuln oil wash. Most black areas to be metallic eventually, except tyres.
Any advice on photographing figures, using phone at the mo, but seems very high contrast and harsh? And sideways....

Well, aside from the sideways pic, your photography seems passable (not 'great', but i've definately seen worse ).

As for the painting, your white looks solid. Although the red seems a little dark, will you eventually brighten it up?

Tempted not to, it's not as dark 'in the flesh' as the photo makes out and I quite like the toned down look, makes it look a little different to other WS. Will see how I feel once i get some other colours on it.

Definately, it would be interesting to see what it would look like with these muted reds.

How are you finding painting the engine parts behind the legs? Hard to reach, right? lol. Reason no.1 for why my dudes get glued on last

It's getting very tempting to try and cut the dudes off. Wish I'd used GW glue! Would have fallen off on their own by now.

haha! How much glue did you use/what kind? If you used a little bit of superglue, you could try to snap it off

Cheers, might try a slightly different rechinique for the next one and post a comparison.

Unfortunatly I used umbrol plastic glue, so it will mean cutting them apart.

Quick update, not achieved nearly I much as I hoped this blog would inspire me to do! Got distracted trying to scratch build a Zone Mortalis tile set, 4 down 12 to go

Managed to get a bit more done on the test figure, still not sure what colour to do the gun, and needs a bit of highlighting and detailing. Decided to stick with the dark red as I think it makes the figure appear a little more menacing.

Plan to weather then hell out it after painting using a Tamiya weathering set, looks like a little makeup dispenser. Never tried weathering powders before so if anyone has any horror stories or advice then let me know.

Wow, great job. You paint skin really well, it looks really good. Any advice for painting skin?

Is the WS logo on the shoulder freehand or a decal. It maybe the pic, but it doesn't quite look 'right'. It looks like the curve in the top left red part isn't there. Granted, it might be the angle of the pic combined with the curve in the should pad making it look straight. But, dam, if that is freehand i tilt my hat to you, cause you've nailed it.

Agreed with the bolters. Black or red would be the colours i suggest, but really anything to break up the white.

Keep working on it

I use a lot of old paints, the skin in this one started white, then got several washes of Reikland Fleshshade which was then mixed with Elf Flesh and built back up in layers. tends to be a bit hit and miss tho.

The decal was an an attempt at a bit of a cheat. Put a decal on, then painted over it with white and used it as a template to freehand it. Tried to make it 'fit' with the rest of the paint job

haha, well the painted decal is pretty convincing. I spent a good 5-10 minutes looking at it going back and forth on the freehand / decal.

Another quick update.
Think this must be the slowest blog on Dakka!
Finished off my test bike, apart from the base, by adding the instrument panel and a simple wash/highlight job on the gun. Also drew a few runic letters onto the wheel cowling. I tried to work out how to write some Mongolian words in 'script', but have no talent for languages, so just used it for inspiration in the end. Will do this on every bike, different each time, to show how each marine 'names' his bike before the hunt. All I have left to do on this one now is the base, and weathering.
I have started two other bikes, the one in the middle of the photo below had a coat of Ulthuan Grey over the initial white base, and a wash of Nuln Oil. It then had another coat of Grey and two thinned coats of Skull White. Whilst the one on the far left had a wash of Nuln Oil directly onto the base coat, followed by a layer of white. To be honest the quality of the finish at this stage is not all that different and I think I will be using this last technique in future as its a lot faster and I think it will look the same in the end!
Ever noticed how the flaws in the paintjob jump out at you when you photograph the fig? Got a fair few niks and lines to clear up!

Does anyone have any suggestions for back banners? Tried using heavy cotton and silk, but both looked a bit odd.
