Subject: Let Freedom Ring - a Grey Knights and White Scars PLOG (pic heavy)
|
 |
Devestating Grey Knight Dreadknight
|
Hi all,
I've been playing and painting Grey Knights for a long time now, but I've never done a painting log, only having pictures on my blog. I felt it was high time to change that. I may throw my White Scars into this plog too once I start painting them.
Anyway, the first thing I did when I started the Grey Knights is decided that that's what they would be, Grey Knights, and not Silver Knights like everyone else. Of course once I had a tonne of models painted I came up with a nice white and red scheme, but didn't want to go back on it. And so Grey Knights they were, and still are. Somewhere along the way I got bored and randomly painted a Machine Head logo on the side of a Rhino, and a new theme was born. The army are not rockers, but they do have the name of a Machine Head song or the roman numral from of the number 1992 painted on all of thier little banner pieces that are strewn across their knees or shoulder pads. Some of the tanks have other motifs from the band painted on them also, but they will come later.
For now, to get things started, I will show you my most recent work, which I have been preparing for a tournament at the end of the month.
First up are my two Dreadknights.
My first of two Stromravens.
My first of five Paladins.
And the man to lead them himself, Lord Kaldor Draigo.
Sorry about how bright some of the pictures are; I don't have a proper camera set-up but do the best with what I have. I will have more updates soon enough, with some more WIPs, and some older work from the 5th edition days.

Great models! I like the idea of actual "grey" knights.

How did you paint the grey? As I'm looking for a better grey for when I'm painting rocks.

A very simple method; Mechanicus Standard Grey base, Nuln Oil wash, Mechanicus Standard Grey drybrush, and then a final drybrush of 1:1 mix of Mechanicus Standard Grey and Astronomicon Grey.

The Machine Head logo fits quite well with the Grey Knights. Good effort. I instantly had Davidian playing in my head when I read the thread title and had to have a look. I'm interested to see what the white and red scheme you came up with looks like.

If by the white and red you mean the White Scars, I can put up a sample for you later.

That'll be what I mean then. Go for it buddy. Meant to say I like the idea with the Rhinos nameplates btw.

They look great, nice simple white. I will say I think the backpack needs a few details picked out in either boltgun (or whatever you kids call it these days) metal or maybe use the red.

hanks. I tried doing the top part of the pack red but it became too garish with red being in so many places. There is some more silver parts near the bottom, but they can't be seen over the angles in the pics above.

I like how you did the Guardsmen and the white on his armor. It came out really nice. Just curious how did you go about them? I have a hard time painting white.

Skull White basecoat, incredibly light Nuln Oil wash (just so it hits the recesses and leaves the lightest bit of shading), Skull White drybrush x2, then line highlight with Skull White. This doesn't seem to work well on vehicles however.

Thanks! If that's your technique maybe it doesn't work because Vehicles have too many large flat surfaces. That's a big problem I have with vehicles. I can see the shading at work though. Keep up the good work!

Yeah for vehicles I follow a different process. Undercoat Skull White, basecoat 4:1 mix of Skull White and Astronomicon Grey, shade the recesses selectively with Nuln Oil, drybrush Skull White x2, edge highlight with Skull White. I just finished my first Stormtalon last night, so I'll put pics of that up soon to show you.
