Over on the bolter and Chainsword they're having a monthly Badab War challenge. I thought Id give it a go and have thrown my lot in with the Star Phantoms. I only have some mock up marines and a Chaplain so far. Im working on a test scheme for the white armour so will hopefully have some paint on the guys soon.

I love the Chaplain with all of the extra skulls attached. And very dynamic posing on the other marines. Dynamic posing is something I need to work on....

Thanks buddy, Im enjoying the change from building the WE.
Worked on a test white earlier. It got a little dry towards the end so looks a little rough but overall Im liking it.

Having myself built both Chaos and Loyalist.. I found Chaos more fun to build and convert, but did find Loyalists easier to build, complete paint.

That being said, nice work, I see those WE's creeping into the background, they are some sneaky gits! I like the minor tweaks your making on the Loyalists to make them more characterful

Yeah they are sneaky gits. Theyre trying to wipe out the fledgling loyalists.

I do love converting my WE but like I say Im enjoying the break but I still cant help myself, I have to change bits here and there.

What are your thoughts on the white? The Star Phantoms are described as Ash white so I didnt want it to be too clean.

I like it, but if you wanted something darker/grittier, you might try using Bleached Bone/Ushabti Bone as your base. Another approach might be to start with a light grey (Deneb Stone/Rakarth Flesh?) and then build up to a bone-color or ash. I haven't tried it, but a light grey base, a black wash, and a bone highlight should come out kind of ash-y....

This was done by using Rakarth flesh as a base then a 50/50 Rakarth/skull white. I then washed it with Asurmen blue then hit it with a 60/40 Skull/Rakarth then finally hit it with very thin skull white. The pics dont realy do the colour justice I need to actually charge my camera battery as my WE suffer slightly from the poorer quality Iphone pics.

A dreadnought I am working on. I want it to basically be almost the Imperial mirror image of my WE Dread.

Paint in progress. The paint keeps drying really quick on me so its still kinda rough but I quite like the look. I might add some battle damage to heighten the effect.

Yeah, you're right, I think some of the shading is lost in the photos; they just look white to me. But I'm glad I was on the right track withe paint.

I think I may have learned something.

The new minis look like they're coming along nicely.

And I like the dread very much. Of course, now, I want to get a venerable dread for myself.

by the way, I like the head. I know someone in the WE thread said it looked too chaos-y, but I think it fits. It looks kind of like a Chaplain dread, which may be apprpriate....

Try a wet palette, it'll stop the paint drying out and give you smoother blends.

The force is looking really good, I like the idea of mirroring your WE dread, plus the face mask makes it look like a giant chaplain.

Sheep I'll look into a wet palette. Even though I've been converting for years I rarely ever painted so I'm basically still learning.

As for the Dread, I'm reading Warriors of Ultramar just now and there's a lot of descriptions of the Mortifactors and I couldn't help but think this style of dread would be ideal for them.

I especially like the dreadnought. I was actually thinking about something similar to make a chaplain dreadnought, looks wicked.

I think your fledging marines will give the WEs a run for there money.

Have you tried priming white, then dark wash, then building up white on the raised areas?

I'm no expert on painting white, but I've done a bit of yellow and bone and it is pretty nice. The new citadel base white covers pretty good too, but I still build up from bone.

Can't wait for more! The star phantoms are my favorite chapter next to blood angels. I wish i could paint white like that.

Hey, Bio, glad to see you back. The scouts look great. Where are the heads from? Are they custom? Great to see you working on more Star Phantoms, but I thought you were going to do some Mortifactors...?

As for the Mortifactors Ive decided to keep going with the Star Phantoms and just build a small force. Ill then work on some Morti's later. Im painting some WE Terminators at the moment so Ill hopefully have something to show in that thread in the next couple of days.

Bio, the heads DO look good on scouts! I had my doubts, as they were intended for IG head-swaps, and I don't have any scout bodies since Chaos doesn't use them.

And a Captain I knocked together from parts that were lying on my desk, including a head Krautscientist sent me from the Sang Guard kit I think?

Those are some cool marines you have going on there! The scouts look great with those heads and the captain is amazing! Be warned though, those mold lines need to be gone and gun barrels drilled or I will come and hunt you down!

I should NOT be allowed near my FLGS unsupervised. Pretty broke this month but I still managed to impulse buy a Tac squad and Drop pod and a Dev squad. As well as online order an Assault Squad. Doh! The Star Phantoms seem to have some heavy reinforcements inbound. The Drop Pod I'll probably butcher for my WE though.

I've been thinking of scratch building a drop pod/ dread claw for my own World Eaters. It will probably never get past the "I want to do this" phase, but there you go.

That is indeed a head from the Sanguinary Guard, btw. They are great for using some extra oomph to characters, even in a non-BA army.

Defintely feeling your pain about buying sprees at your FLGS: For me, every minute I am spending at the FLGS costs money statistically. They should just have a taximeter running while I am in there, really

Funny thing is I only went in to pick up a couple pots of paints and ended up spending almost £70! Lol! The woman that owns the shop even said she likes it when I come in as she always manages to convince me to spend. Lol. Had to admire her honesty.

I love the colour schemes on both, but hey...
I like the white over black spray paint, it looks better than plain white spray paint, imho. How do you plan to use these guys in terms of battles? Devastators galore?
