A friend of a friend is selling off his 4000 point GK army, for only 300 dollars. It sounds like s steal to me, but I also feel like I'm jumping the gun a little bit because I've always wanted to play Space Marines, not really GK. I couldn't get the entire army list before he left, but he did mention a Stormraven, 35 Paladins, a few Dreadnaughts. I guess my actual question is are the models compatible with the Codex: Space Marine? If I had a good enough fluff and story behind it would you play the army?

Most would work fine as veterans, though it would be hard to pass them off as normal tac marines. All of the MEQ codexes provide a good deal of overlap as long as you dont make your chapter too specific.

And heaven forbid if the Marine would also happen to have an intimidating looking, vertical scar. Then you're surly boned. Those guys are the worst. Not a chance I'd say.

Eh, some is compatible some isn't. The Stormraven is, the dreadnoughts might be(depends on their loadouts), but the paladins will not be(they simply have different weapon load outs than SM termies), nor will the special characters/HQs, nor will the "standard" strike squads.

I say yes. Why not? If anything they are more Baroque or old fashioned looking.

Could be more "bling".

I would defiantly would by this for $300 and use the for Dark Angles. So if I could use them, you can use them as well for what ever SM you want to.

You can use them, but they will be proxy or "counts as" models, since Paladins or GK Termies won't have the right weapons for other SM. The GK strike squad marines also won't have the right weapons.

It's basically just not going to be anything close to a WYSIWYG army, so that really depends on who you play with and whether they're okay with that.

Most of the people I play with are fine with my armies not being WYSIWYG. I'll just have to be a lot more careful making sure they know what they all hold. I was also thinking of using one
FW Chapter Tactics, The Red Hunter to try and make it seem a little fluffy as well.

On the general philosophy of 'I don't care what colors you're painted, only about your wargear,' GK are going to be awful for any other kind of space marine. Force weapon and storm bolter look nothing like any standard wargear for any other MEQ army. The sheer amount of work that would be required to convert simply wouldnt' be worth it.

The vehicles transition much more neatly.

In terms of value for money, it's an extremely good deal.

Buy it, no second thoughts.
Grey Knights are an awesome army
You will love playing them and you can always buy some extra models to represent WYSIWYG and use them as regular marines

As long as you proxy properly, you could do it.
State that all storm bolters are just bolters, and that halberds are CCW, or something.
Special units, get creative. The teleport troops now have jump packs, etc.

Why not play them as GK. They a fun elite style army. Not a strong as the once were, but still a blast to play friendly games with. Also they play similar to sm.
