Warning From Magnus? Not Listening!
|
So I wrote this list for my space marines (competitiveness in mind). They're my own chapter but I'm using Imperial Fists chapter tactics. Bit cheesy but anyway, what do you think?
HQ
Pedro Kantor
(185p)
TROOPS
10 Tactical Marines
w plasma gun and missile launcher, led by Veteran Sergeant w power sword, in Rhino (230p)
10 Scouts
w camo cloaks and sniper rifles (140p)
ELITES
10 Sternguard Veterans
w 10 combi-plasmas, in Drop Pod (365p)
9 Sternguard
w 9 combi-flamers (298p)
HEAVY SUPPORT
3 Centurion Devastators
w grav cannons and amps and missile launchers (280p)
Land Raider Redeemer
w multi-melta (250p)
TOTAL: 1748p
The tactics are basically - plas-guard deep strike behind enemy lines and unleash their plasmas on the heaviest infantry unit. Flame-guard go in the redeemer taking on the largest unit. Using combi weapons ASAP means you get to use the most possible (ie. before casualties). The Tac squad go out to claim and hold any objectives outside my own deployment and the scouts hold any in my deployment, picking off the most threatening units. Originally it was a 1500p list but I added the centurions just because they're so awesome. Having 4 scoring units (Kantor makes Sternguard scoring) is a plus Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and Kantor joins the flame-guard in the redeemer

From personal Experience the low troop count will kill you and the sternguard sqads are a little on the expensive side

I'm not too worried about the troop count - 4 scoring units of 10 models isn't that bad (especially for marines)... and true the SG are a little on the expensive side but I dont really see a way around that

I highly doubt this list will work competitively.
Your basically handing them 365 points turn one, 10 combi-plas even if you combat squad 5 and 5 is not going to dent any competitive army. They will be in cover, and your unit will die the next phase.
9 combi flamers is just a bad idea as well, there are very few competitive instances where they will be helpful.
2nd you have to figure that most competitive lists can kill ~ 20 space marines a turn, with shooting and assaulting combined. Which means the 10 space marines that just drop podded right in front of them and the 10 in the rhino are going to die turn 1 or at the very least turn 2.
This means that you have to count on 3 centurion devs, a redeemer with pedro and 9 combi flamer sternguard and 10 scounts to combat a 1750 list Minus whatever you killed turn 1 with 10 combi plas and turn 2 with shooting.
I would say seriously consider play testing this list as proxies against any of the current top tier netlists, I think you will quickly find, that you just don't have the tools to take on any of them.
Necrons, Eldar, Tau, Sisters, Grav Spam, Balanced SM, Footdar, Deamons All pretty much don't have anything to worry about from this list.

Any suggestions for a different fire base style list? Preferably not too tank heavy...

If you want to go drop pod go all out, 7-9 drop pods with tacticals, sterguard, and a TDA chapter master/calgar.
The alternative is rhino spam but if you don't want tanks that wont work.
You could always also go crusade style run black templar and flood the board with 120 space marines.
Alternatively you can tweak the list you have now and make it scarier from a competitive standpoint.
I would try something list this
Kantor
10 Tacticals melta melta combi melta pod
10 Tacticals melta combi melta missile launcher pod
10 sternguard 6 combi meltas pod
9 sternguard pod
Grav Centurions missile launchers
6 Devistators 4 lascannons
Thunderfire cannon pod
This way turn 1 you can shoot them with lascannons with tank hunter, thunderfire cannon, and 3 squads of marines, 2 sternguard and 1 tactical, also you can combat squad the missile launcher squad out and drop the 5 with 2 melta tac squad turn 1/2 depending on if it has a target or not.
I will say this though, this list and all of the marine lists have uphill battles against certain armies, if this lists 1st turn goes poorly it cannot recover, other armies can have a rough turn 1 and still be fine, if your first turn of shooting doesn't take out the priority targets, your going to be a sitting duck.
In my opinion the top pure marine lists will be from the Ultramarine(Calgar, mass tactical rhino rush or drop pod with support fire of thunderfire, missile devs, and storm talons), Iron Hands (Mass Vehicles with IWND, and a beatstick of a captain/master with bike squad), or white scars ( grav bike spam, or tactical spam in rhinos), but they are not going to be instant win armies, they will have to be played extremely well by generals who are at the top of their game. Marine armies don't have any room for mistakes and or bad dice rolling against the rest of the armies on a competitive level.

60 bolter shots first turn, with thunderfire cannon support. The thunderfire itself can kill 10+ models a turn if facing horde armies.
The closest thing to a true horde army you will probably face competitively is a tervigon spam list. And its not a good matchup, your going to have to try to get first turn and kill 1-2 of his MC before they start spawning/fly.
But tbh 1-2 thunderfire cannons are much better v.s. a horde army than a redeemer and 9 combi flamers. If your local area has competitive horde armies than drop either the lascannon devs or the centurions and get a 2nd thunderfire.

also in first list your flamer stergaurd have njo dro pod, which is out right not good.
in list 2, why have the 2ndf tac squad with ML. it has to snap fire the turn it comes down, which basically ruins it.
same with giving other sqaud a multi melta are they gonna be combat sqaudded before gmae out of d pods? if so it would make more since.

Yes since you can only drop 3 pods turn 1 you drop the melta melta combi melta tac squad and the 2 sternguard squads, deciding to combat squad the melta sternguard depending on what your facing. The 2nd tac squad combat squads from the beginning giving you a home objective 5 man tac squad with a ML that can shoot turn one, and on turn 2+ the ability to bring in another melta/combi melta 5 man unit in the pod. Alternatively if you are worried about hordes you can replace the melta/combi melta, with a flamer/combi flamer.
