Thinking of starting up a new fantasy army... Which is the best/most fun to play? Convince me! I've previously played Empire and WoC but not since 8e was released so don't really know how any of the armies play. Open to any and all suggestions cheers

EDIT: I'm less interested in how cheap an army is as to how much fun it is to play

Skaven man. We get hordes of slaves to do our bidding and die for us, never to break in combat in fear of death. We get technological wonders, and magical abilities far beyond and man or elf-thing. They will fear our assassins and plagues! The Skaven Iron Paw will rule all things on the surface! And the best part is? You can never lose. Because it was some traitorous rats that blew up your Warp Lightning Cannon that caused you to lose. So it wasn't your fault.

Skaven is so freaking fun! They have the most wacky awesome contraptions and hordes of slaves.

I actually do like the idea of lizardmen tho for my next army possibly although I am not ready for a new army haha

If you have brettonia and woc then I would pick WoC they are competitive and fun to play easy to paint and I always loose to them haha

Well first off, it depends on your play-style, and your financial situation. Here is an example in my case on why I play High Elves:

Playstyle: I like to be a aggressive with my army a lot of the time, however I am a sucker for units that are flexible and are able to fulfill both roles in the army. Thanks to the ASF rule, HE are a natural defensive and a offensive army all rolled up into one package, which can be crucial depending on what opponent yo are fighting. HE's can be a shooting/magic spamming defensive army with Lothern Seaguard, Archers, Bolt Throwers, and the Sisters of Averlorn, or an army with a lot of hitting power with units such as White Lions, Swordmasters, and Dragon Princes. Plus many of the models look great on the board so whats not to like? If you want a magic heavy army, HE's have one of the best in the game, which is why many people opt for the Elves of Ulthuan.

Finances: A big reason I went HE's is that, although I like armies such as the Empire and Orcs, it took a lot of time and money just to put together an Empire Army, which is why I opted for a more elite army in 8th edition. Despite already having a Bretonnia Army (which I got 3,000 points worth for only $200.00), the playstyle of just charging every turn can be quite tedious, which is why I opted for a more infantry-based, flexible army with HE's, and its a lot easier on my wallet in the long run. Horde armies are fun, but they cost a lot to make.

Simple

Pick the army you like the look of models most. THEN PLAY THEM. You are investing a lot of money to build an army so you need to pick one you like the look of or you might just get sick of the sight of them.

I would recomend WOc because they aren't as expensive to play as other armies.

I would recommend Ogre Kingdoms because IMO they are even less expensive to collect than WOC (if you don't include gnoblars).

Seriously, if you already have some WoC around, then I'd just stick with them. Low model count, bashy, awesome looking. I don't play them, but my WoC friend seems to have fun smashing me and anyone else that lines up against him.

Thanks for that, I quit fantasy because my army was too expensive nad I'm looking for a cheap army to collect if I want to come back.

Don't be fooled. Just because ogres have fewer models doesn't mean that they're a cheaper army. GW hikes the price per model when you have fewer models, to compensate for the fact that you're not buying as many of them.

The real cheapest armies are ones where you can get minis on eBay from a starter box. HE and skaven are the cheapest armies to put together right now because they're both in island of blood, and you can still get dwarfs and goblins from the old skull pass kit.

Just don't be fooled. Bigger models are more expensive - just because you have fewer of them doesn't straight away make it cheaper.

In any case, you should pick the army you like the best, as it's going to be the easiest to spend money on them, regardless of how much you have to spend.

I was thinking of doing dwarfs so I can use AOW miniatures.

if youre looking at Dwarfs, Mantic's models for them are pretty sweet!

With a bit of converting (turning one of the Ogres/Ironguts into a character) you can just about make 1000pts just out of the battleforce box.

I don't think there are many armies that can say that (maybe WOC)!
