Hi all.

I've recently been looking at Space Wolves, and particularly a "Deathwing" orientated list. That is, every model in Terminator Suits, like the Dark Angels first company. My original plan was to take Grimnar and then run several squads of Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour, with some Long Fangs / Thunderwolves / Cool Wolfy things to provide support. However, I soon ran into a problem, because Space Wolves in Terminator Armour can't Deep Strike using their teleporters in their suits, as it unsettles them. Furthermore, only one Wolf Guard squad per army may take a Land Raider.

So I'm wondering if anyone else has ever tried to do anything similar. If so, how did you manage it? Did you just park one squad in a Raider and footslog the rest? It seems like a very dubious tactic...

Thanks all.

Look up 'Loganwing' - thats what termie wolves normally get called

You can take LR's as heavy support too - I've a list with 2 squads of wolfguard and two land raiders with some long fangs on the side.

You can get up to four landraiders in (1 DT and 3 HS)or if you go 2k and up, you can bring 7

Its because ordinance is still a word.
However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.

It's also worth bearing in mind that WG can mix PA and TDA in the same squad, so if you include some cheap PA guys with just BP/CCW then you can counter some of the problems with the termies being hugely expensive. Don't be tempted to go overboard with weapons, as often a PW/SB/Combi is good enough to handle most targets, especially if you take a mix of axes/mauls, and also makes your termies cheaper than most others.

The problem is that CC terminators are fairly dead in 6th ed so you can make a very good shooting based loganwing. Why bother spending points on super expensive storm shields or land raiders? Just load up on cyclone missile launchers!

On paper its pretty viable. Your paying a bit over 30 points for each model on the table and they have a 2+ save.

Point for point what your probably going to see is an army slightly high in durability, and slightly low in dakka.

Dedicated assault units will roll you. Anything that gets close thats not a dedicated assault unit will get rolled.

I would not run a drop pod list (though its tempting) as it will have your coming in piecemeal. You don't want more than 3 pods.

Well thanks for all the feedback guys. So the general consensus is to make the Terminators more ranged than CC, and to not get close to enemy CC squads?

33 points vs 44 points per Terminator, if comparing to Dark Angels. 40 if comparing to Grey Knights. The real strength for Space Wolves is that they are cheaper per model and can all be armed with Combi-Weapons and still be cheaper per model. Plus they come with Power Weapons so you can mix Swords/Axes/Mauls as much as you desire for free.

The downside is that you can only Deep Strike if you have a Drop Pod and you don't get the Deathwing Assault Special Rule or Psycannons.

If you aren't keen on walking consider:

275 Points - Logan Grimnar, The Great Wolf

120 Points - Rune Priest
1 w/ TDA, Storm Bolter

150 Points - Dreadnought
1 w/ Multi-Melta, DCCW, Heavy Flamer
1 Drop Pod w/ Storm Bolter

1 Drop Pod w/ Storm Bolter

150 Points - Dreadnought

1 Drop Pod w/ Storm Bolter

250 Points - Wolf Guard Pack
4 w/ TDA, Combi-Weapon, Power Weapon
1 w/ TDA, Storm Bolter, CML, Power Weapon
1 Drop Pod w/ Storm Bolter

250 Points - Wolf Guard Pack
4 w/ TDA, Combi-Weapon, Power Weapon
1 w/ TDA, Storm Bolter, CML, Power Weapon
1 Drop Pod w/ Storm Bolter

250 Points - Wolf Guard Pack
4 w/ TDA, Combi-Weapon, Power Weapon
1 w/ TDA, Storm Bolter, CML, Power Weapon
1 Drop Pod w/ Storm Bolter

149 Points - Wolf Guard Pack
3 w/ TDA, Combi-Weapon, Power Weapon
1 Drop Pod w/ Storm Bolter

Total Points: 1744

7 Drop Pods gives you 4 on Turn 1. Not a lot of anti-air, and not as much alpha-strikeness as power armor Wolf Guard would take, but then you aren't interested in making the most powerful list ever. You just want loads of Terminators and to do it with Space Wolves.

Thanks for taking the time to write that up, but I was under the impression that models in TDA couldn't be embarked in Drop Pods?

Furthermore, what are your thoughts regarding one 10 man squad instead of two 5 man squads?

Thanks.

Models in TDA can use pods, but take up 2 slots (answering your second question, if you take the full 10 you have to footslog). The reason you don't normally see them in pods is that in every other army termies can DS anyway.

What Paradigm said. TDA makes the model Bulky, so they take up two spots. They can ride in Drop Pods and Land Raiders. Non-SW TDA can Deep Strike due to Teleporters.

A 10 man unit would have to walk. There are some fun games you can do if you are taking non-Wolf Guard, as you can peel off individual models to go with the other units as Pack Leaders. I've seen this done to stick two CML in a Drop Pod with 3 Combi-Plasma to get some carefully placed pain on the board. 6 S7 AP2, 4 S4 AP5, and 4 S8 AP3 shots can upset MEQ and many vehicles, particularly if you are coming in at an odd angle.

Its sad when people view the PW from SW terminators as more useful than PFs that normal terminators get.

The sad thing is -- its true. The PF is almost never worth the upgrade cost.

Just to clarify....the only Terminator unit that can now take Drop Pods are Space Wolves. You can fit an IC in Termie armor into a normal Pod, including Belial though.

I've run LoganWing for a few years. My first Logan Wing army was when you could buy Runic Charms and get a reroll on a missed armor save. Fun times.

The army dies to mass fire. I've had no fun with it in 6th edition. None at all. I'm not a WAAC player, I run lists I think will be fun for me and my opponent and the different Loganwing types of lists just fold so easily.

This is also why Deathwing armies don't win tournaments either...
