Subject: Chaos space marines - What's going on?

Hi guys, I'm new here so if I'm posting in the wrong section I do apologize,
Recently Ive gotten back into the 40k hobby, and although I was previously a loyalist Dark Angel player, my darker side pushed me towards playing CSM, after thinking about which legion to paint/play Ive stuck with the Alpha Legion, so to begin me and a buddy picked up the Dark vengeance set and started painting.
After finishing the models and having a few games I went into my local GW to expand my force and was surprised to see the same sculpts for the standard CSM, after seeing the chosen marines in the dark vengeance box i thought the chaos models had been "re vamped" but I only noticed this with the new raptor/warp talon models (which look amazing!) and now the "older" CSM models seem too.... hmmm i hate to say it but, a little outdated
Does anyone know of any releases or rumors that we can expect in the near future?
Thanks.

Second waves come out month , maybe two after first wave. So no there won't be any chaos stuff in the future . But that is hardly a problem , csm armies stay away from power armored models as hard as possible. You want 4x10 cultists as your troops and they have new models. Cheap too , because of how many people bought Vengance.

Ah okay thanks for clearing that up, i was thinking of using cultists, i want my army to be very "fluffy" as in very few actual alpha legionnaires and a tonne of renegade "puppets"

yeah if you want to play Codex Heldrake/Cultists, that's fine.
Probably fitting for Alpha Legion.... "Where's all the marines"?
But it would be sweet if they came out with proper boxes of the new figures, they're way better than the old ones.

Not much happening on that front, at least until all the other codecies are done. CSMs got existing metal figures updated with some plastic kits, but maintained the same plastics at this stage. Sad given the way the regular SM tacticals were updated this time around. Havocs also stuck with the older sets as well. That said the new SM tactical figures are wholly compatible with the chaos marine plastics. My own chaos marines are a combination of old WFB chaos champions converted for 40k, original 40k metal chaos marine figures, old space wolf blood claw minis (before the plastics) and a mix of chaos and generic space marine plastics. Gives them a wonderful chaotic and non-regular feel. Never liked all my chaos marines to look the same. No thanks. The cultist figures are neat, but a poor option for customization thanks to the crazy way they are pieced together in the boxed set to make it easier to know which parts go with which. If you want lots of cultists I recommend combining a set from DV, and then buying a box of chaos marauders, a box of cadian IG and a box of catachan IG and combining all the parts with some added chaos mutation bits to make up unique looking models instead. Back when the Eye of Terror codex was released GW offered a bunch of "chaos mutant" kits that included 1 40k ork sprue, 1 chaos mutation sprue, and then a couple of either IG sprues or chaos marauder sprues, go make up random collections of chaos mutants. I went a step further by buying a bunch of various other spriues as well to make a massive horde of mutants. Can't buy individual sprues any more, but I still use all those mutants as the cultists for my nurgle chaos marine force.
Don't listen to those who tell you to only use a small subset of models from the chaos codex. They all have their uses, except possibly for the mutilators. They are overpriced melee units with slow and purposful. That SaP is what made spawn hard to use in the previous version of the book. They *can* deal with big shooters that need to not move in the back field much, but against more mobile opponents they rather well are hard to use. Cultists/heldrake spam is kind of dull...

Haha "Codex Helldrake/Cultists" i get what you mean, i would like to use some havocs maybe, But IMO the kits are horrible, i read somewhere that CSM supplements are being written for the "founding Legions" and we could see themed kits per legion, similar to Dark angels/space wolves etc, here's hoping!
I totally get what you mean skriker, after the dark vengeance set i was bored of the *repetitive* cultist models, i think i'll basically do what you've said, kitbash anything humanoid i can get my hands on and call the regular cultists

Supplements haven't generally brought new models with them, so I wouldn't expect any new chaos models for a while, at least until every codex has been updated. Which is annoying as I too love the new DV/Raptor style of chaos but am not such a fan of the old CSM box.
If you're looking for hordes of operatives/cultists and only a few marines then there are a couple of options open to you beyond the codex. One would be to use IG allies or even IG primary detachment to represent a full-scale rebellion led by the Alphas. Another would be to use the Tyrant's Legion list from IA:Badab War part 1, which includes Guard/cultist types and marines in the same army list. I think there's even an option for them to be in mixed squads (not sure on that though) and there's certainly a rule where shooting at a SM unit through a cultist unit gives a bonus to their cover save, which is very cool and fluffy. Might be something to look into if your local group is ok with FW rules.

I still like the old Chaos models. Even if they are a bit dated. But I've a shedtonne of them, they do look awesome when put into the right poses.
But the new Chosen ones were just way cooler.
Shame about the cultists though. I'm going to just use some old skool IG that my mate gave me when he cleared out his loft to reach the 35 of them, then I'm done with Cultists.

That sounds like pretty much exactly what im looking for! Thank you very much, I will be looking into it!
although if I can mix squads, in my eyes, true scale marines are a must!

It's not that i don't like the olde marines, it's just that they don't really hold up to the new style, although i was thinking, with a bit of kitbashing and converting raptor bitz, a mid point could be reached!
Thanks for your help guys!

Well, I'm no expert on CSM or Alpha Legion, but if you're looking for some sweet models and some versatility, you could always wait until Forge World does the third Horus Heresy book, where Alpha Legion gets a bunch of rules. That way, you can play regular CSM with some awesome FW models, and be able to play the Horus Heresy Legion list against other HH lists. Granted, you could always use 30k rules in 40k with your opponent's consent anyways, and it'd be fluffier that way too.
Anyways, something to chew on.
