Hi!

Well, its been a long time since I bothered with forums, or the hobby for that matter! But making a project log is motivating! So here I am, I picked Raven Guard, for a few reasons mainly the awesomeness of FW's Captain Korvydae, using Space Marines is safe (meaning if I have another year or two's break, my army will still be ok) SM are a good painting army - meaning the armour is one colour so not to much messing around! And I like the RG play style, ninjas..

Here is a looksie at the list Im working at (I'm buying as I paint so feel free to pick at it!!) Yes no Shrike!! This list is based around Korvydae and Imperial Armour 8 although Im using the GW SM dex and I had to use AA stuff instead of Scouts (one of my main opponent is flying Guard!), so not 100% fluff, but fluffy none the less imo!. Also I painted some minis, I have some FW goodies and the new tac squad - which incidently is very nice!

Nice stuff, those finished marines look good, nice and dark. That's a very interesting and unusual way to paint black, and I've not come across it before, but it gives great results. Is the pre-shading built up from a white or black basecoat?

the pre shading is very rough, basically 3 grays, light, middle dark, when I wash with black (chaos black thinned lots with water and vallejo thinner) you can work on the blending, takes a bit of time - not to much, but its a non fiddly way of getting a reasonble effect!

Thanks, I may have to try that black method next time I need a black marine, as it gives a nice subtle gradient that I've spent a lot of time trying to achieve to no avail. I am a huge fan of using Black Wash on anything made of plastic, but this takes it a step further and looks really cool.

That is an unusual way to paint black, whats the next stage is it just multiple washes of black?

Edit: Ignore me I'm too slow typing

lol no worries, the wash itself needs to be applied with a bit of care, its not a fast solution to painting black, but you dont have to be precise. Apply a layer then, work the layers down to the darkest sections, basically the darkest sections get the most layers.

On the rough coat dont spend time doing the recesses, the black wash will sort that. Hope its of some use...
