I am thinking of developing a skirmish game for personal use. It will be heavily terrain and mission influenced. Since I want to keep it at a skirmish level, but am not really interested in characters, as well as wanting it to be terrain centric, should I keep the scale at 22-20 mm for everything? Would this be sufficient for painting interesting pieces? Mechs 35mm to 70mm will be a common sight, operating in groups of 2 to 5, and escorting infantry/ performing specialist roles in pairs. The game will be based off of trying to complete an objective, such as rescuing a hostage or disabling a critical piece on a space elevator. Shooting will be based on multiple factors like- target size, target speed, then the weapons power and penetration power- the amount of d6/ d3s it gets to add to its weapons power, which are factored against its armor, health, and injury tolerances. Shooting is only reactionary, and models can mark areas that they can overwatch. Increased area decrease accuracy, unless you force the models to pay concentration points to bring their accuracy back up to par. Concentration can be used to enhance actions or trigger actions, such as putting a shaped charge on a door, or moving with booster packs or running between pieces of cover.
Activation occurs based on dice rolls and orders- at the start of the turn, both players can "order" units to commit a series of actions in order- these are hidden. Each player places tokens in a bag for the number of squads they have, then they draw to see who goes first. Once another unit can trace LOS to it(activating unit) and succeeds an initiative test, it can activate out of order, but it's token stays in the pool, even though any model can only activate once. Special actions have activation times- for example, detonating shaped chargesto take out a door, it takes 3 unit drawings(not activations) to detonate. Grenades take ) or 1, depending on an initiative test by both the thrower and avoider. Units have a movement type, but speed is just determined by a stat.
That's just a general overview of what I am thinking of for gameplay, what do you think? I am being interrupted, will post more later.
