Subject: Refresh My Memory on Characters Moving in the Front Rank

Ghastly Grave Guard

Playing a few games of WHFB soon and I haven't played in awhile.
The unit is 5-wide and there are 4 characters (heroes and lords) in it. The unit itself has full command.
1) All of the characters must go in the front rank, but there is one spot left. Is there a member of the unit command who MUST take this spot? Is it the champion?
2) Lets say my lord is on the corner, and I charge into combat, and due to positioning the lord is outside of combat, and he's the only one who isn't fighting. I know he can Make Way into combat, but how does this work? Does he swap places with the non-character? Or does the non-character leave combat while the rest of the front rank shifts over?
3) I vaguely remember something about how you can shift your characters around within the front rank anytime you make a normal move. So, if the lord is on the corner and you want him in the middle, you can move him there. How does this work exactly? Can I do it on a march? What about a charge?
TACTICS BONUS ROUND
I know conventional wisdom for characters in the front rank is to have your wizard on the corner in the hopes that he stays out of combat. But what about combat-centric characters? Is it better to have them in the middle?

1) Unit command MUST go in the front rank. They WILL displace characters to do so. So in your case you have to put 2 characters in the 2nd rank
2) Make way allows him to swap physical places, which can include command models

So to clarify: When you are not in combat, all of yournunit command must be in the front rank. Characters must take the other spaces in front rank (BRB FAQ). In combat, a character who is not in combat MAY choose to swap places with ANY other model, so as to get in to combat (but not to get out of combat). From this point of view, your blender character can go anywhere, and out of combat may be best; so that you can choose where he will go to.
So the answer to your third q is that characeers must be at the front. Nit sure, but I think you would need to reform to swap where they were in the unit when juat moving.

Thanks guys, used this last night.
Question - I get into combat, and I Make Way. The combat ends, and my unit is still alive and on the board. Do the characters who Made Way go back to the second rank, or do they stay in the front? If they go back, do they go back to their original positions, or can I choose new positions for them?

They go to the second rank, as the command HAS to go in the front. Where in the second rank is up to you

But only command replace the characters which Maee Way - you can't replace a wizard with make way then moge him back to the front afterwards.

Right-o. You're saying, if a wizard (or any other character) is in the front rank, and I Make Way with another character that's in the second rank, I can't choose to replace the wizard.

Correct. The Make Way rule only allows you to displace a Rank and File model (including the Command Models) BRB pg 100

Yeah, you can't replace other characters with Make Way.
That said, if you've got a unit formed in such a way that a certain character is pushed to the back rank, and you've chosen that character to be your combat character and not your wizard, then you are a silly billy.
