Firstly I’d like to point out this isn’t a GW hate thread, this is just my own opinion and that it’s more of a cry for help. Dakkas always treated me well over the past few years so this seemed like a good place to turn. I’ve been in the hobby for a good 8 or so years now but for the past 2 everything about GW just seems to rub me the wrong way and I’m starting to feel more than a little exasperated by the hobby and beginning to feel that I should really just hang up my hobby hat and move on.
Unlike previous releases such as dark elder and deamons, I’ve found that the past few releases that they’ve put out have just felt forced or rushed, like the tubby marines for instance or most of the chaos codex (mauler fiends and dakka fiends being the two largest disappointments from that release). Even new ideas like the hardback army books have just left a bad taste in my mouth and left me wondering if I can really justify spending £25 just to update the rules for one of my armies. I think what really bugs me is the idea that if I want to make my army a little bit better I can just pay £25 for the latest tablet only codex supplement so I can rock up to a game against some guy who doesn’t have a tablet and proceed to have the advantage simply because I do :/ as someone who has spent half their hobby career as a serious tourney gamer this one really doesn’t sit well with me
The only few releases that they’ve put out that I’ve really enjoyed have been far too expensive for me to even consider paying for. The dark elf re-release is probably the best example of this as for a long time now I’ve wanted to run an all witch army but at £30 per box there is no way I can make that happen, no matter how jaw dropingly gorgeous the new models are :/ especially when I look over to warmachine to find that they have very affordable clockwork angel models which would be more of a joy to paint. And the most recent release (the sisters of battle one) has left me fuming as GW have put zero effort into updating one of my favourite armies.
What I really need is something to get me back into the hobby, something to reignite my passion for it though the problem is I can’t find anything :/ I’ve tried to see it through the eyes of a beginner (my girlfriend recently got back into the game and started up a tzeentchy deamon army). It was a lot of fun helping her but it wasn’t the real buzz that I once had. I suppose, selfishly, it wasn’t me enjoying it, it was me enjoying her enjoying it :/. I’ve tried furthering my painting skills but I’ve kinda hit my limit there and as for new models, well you need only read above to see my problem with that one.
As for the game itself, with the new power creep in every single book it’s hard to really enjoy a game anymore. The last game I had was a week ago where I played 1500pts against space marines then the same against chaos marines and I just felt bad. I took wraith castle, an army that I’ve loved for ages but due to its sudden power creep (and the space marine players lack of experience) both games were a cake walk (yes, boo hoo I won games.it must be sooo hard for me ). The problem was that neither of us were having fun, just putting toys on a table then taking them off again.
I know a fair few dakkaites have been through this problem and I kinda want to hear how you have all bounced back and maybe even help me find something to jump start my hobby career again.
Sorry for the long post, I’ll stop whining now

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

If you don't have any reason to continue in the hobby then why not just find a more appealing hobby instead of trying to force yourself to enjoy the one you don't really like anymore?

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

Do you have any local gamers who feel the same way? It may not be just you. Maybe if you can discuss the issues all are having among your regulars you can pinpoint what is bugging the majority of you and come to some consensus. For us it was the shifting, lame-ass rules from one edition to the next so we set about discussing and implementing a solution to it. We are enjoying the game more than ever, but your mileage may vary.

I suppose that because I've invested so much time into it it's hard to let go :/ I've played warmachine and it's pretty fun though there isn't a large amount of people near me who play it and the scope for converting and modeling is pretty slim. same goes for malifaux. me and my girlfried started it together (show girls VS ten thunders) though we both kinda drifted away from it, mostly for the same reasons as warmachine on my part. Me and my mates pretty much just stick to TCGs here these days amanita, not really :? evey one here seems to enjoy it as it is. I'm starting to think it may just be me :/

GW is a company, not a hobby.
Wargaming is a hobby.
Assuming you still enjoy wargaming, I highly suggest you try some other games.
Seriously, go out and find other people who play various wargames, do some research, give them a shot.
Most other games are cheaper, more balanced, and have clearer rules.

I'm a spaceship gamer at heart.
There are dozens of companies that produce models, but less that produce matching rules, which is fine if you're more open about gaming.
Firestorm Armada (and really the whole Spartan Games collection of games) are pretty solid, and V2.0 is coming out in December with a huge community of play testers and community feedback. Models look great and have only gotten better, plus its cheap for a large and diverse fleet. They do other games, from 28mm skirmish to 10mm company level action.
There's Dropzone Commander for 10mm sci-fi action. Haven't played it, but looks solid.
Flames of war if you enjoy anything WWII.
There's also fan made ruleset derivative of Full Thrust for spaceships in my signature called Extreme Thrust. A little complicated with the ship builder rules/excel spreadsheet, but the site has pre-made templates for a number of popular sci-fi universes.

Hmm. How about board game-like war games? You buy one thing (the game itself), no need to worry about updates, and usually not as expensive as games like warhammer. The old Axis and Allies games I heard were pretty good. You could also try to make up your own war game and see how that turns out.

Well, I know you want to get back into GW games, but honestly, one of the best ways to do that is to take a break and branch out. There's so much out there, from companies that actually care and price accordingly.
Anyways, I hope you find what you're looking for. Just don't box yourself into solely GW.

Honestly it seems the only real problem you have is monetary. Just save up slower. I play a non-bootleg Forge World army so I'm always a little bemused when I see people complaining about plastic costs. Those new plastic Witches are just now catching up to Forge World infantry prices, and they come with spare bits. Same with the plastic space marine veterans.
Since I waste all my money on 40K I have to budget myself for a Nintendo 3DS and Pokemon X. It seems like just yesterday I just spent a wad of cash on my DSi and Pokemon Black. The DSi is practically mint, no smudges, scuffs, scratches, or fingerprints, and I have to sell it to Gamestop for $40 so I can get a 3DS for a bit cheaper in the near future.
That doesn't diminish my enjoyment, but it is a downer. I think people just get too caught up in negativity, especially in this hobby.
If you want an all-witch army, then slowly save up for it, or give it some time and perhaps you'll be able to pick up all those spare bits (bodies might be expensive) on eBay for cheap. You can't even really blame GW because Raging Heroes has similar dark elf scantily-clad females with attractive sculpts, and they cost around as much if not more.
I don't understand this mentality of "I want this, but I cannot afford it right now, yet I don't want to save up for it, and now I hate everything and everybody sucks."

Most people I know play games for less then two years and then sell them . You can't wait to save up for an army , because when you have the cash there is a good chance that your friends stoped playing it. And am talking about the popular game , where I play there are 3 options . You can pay w40k , WFB or warmachine , every other system is played by fewer then 10 people and you have to know them in advance , because if you don't and still somehow buy an army you will not have a place to play , because stores don't let people play games/models from firms they don't support.

Personally, especially on a hobby as expensive as this, if you have to talk yourself into it you might wanna find another. Price can be avoided if you manage your money well enough and dont mind waiting a little while for a new model or two (sucks but possible), but if you have to argue with yourself to enjoy the hobby.....thats just causing issues you dont need in life.

I have tried other games. For what ever reason, if it's not GW, it just doesn't quite gell. So I believe, GW is a hobby on it's own right. Yes it's a war-gaming hobby, but a war-gaming is not GW.
For what ever it's not GW it doesn't matter. I understand this from the original poster. I tried other games, minis, it's just not the same.
That being said, is it really the price that is turning you off? Alot of people don't need Apple products, but they still buy them. It has great quality, and it's WAAAYYYYYYY over priced as well. For alot of people who can't afford it, but still keep buying Apple stuff, it's called saving money or getting it by other means.
So let's take a look at price. Alot of people go to the bars and drink. I use to see some people piss away $200 a weekend, or even a nite at a bar.
Movies for me, can cost $50 for a 2 hour movie with the family if not more. GW can be used for months or years of gameplay. So for a movie it's $25/hour. GW lets say we spend $500 for one game a month. It's about $41/month, say a game is 2 hours long, it's $20/hour. It can even be less if you get more games. Could be more if you play less games.
So in the end, it comes to how much per hour you find acceptable.
Some sport games, you can play over $100, $200 a ticket. For 2 or 3 hours of fun was it worth it? So how can something $50, or $50 of fun for a sport even be worth it, for a one time thing, while a GW being $20/hour not being fun?
If you feel you have been out priced (I do, so don't buy anymore) it is time to quit GW.
Now for the power creep. Nothing can be done about this. It's GW. It was always like this and it seems it will never change. It's GW, and how they do business. They are there to make money, and GW feels this is how they make money.
If you learn to accept this, then fine, if not, again maybe it's time to stop doing the GW hobby.
Then again, there is always, just stop and take a break. I have done this many times, and doing it now. I still like to read and discuss about GW, but really stopped buying anything. (waiting for Tyranids to see if I actually keep going or take an extended long break)
If you take a break , you will know when you have the "itch" to come back and restart again.
Sorry, got a headache, rambling on, can't remember what my point was.

If you are looking for the spark try taking a break from it and dabble in other things people find interesting in your area and ask why they prefer it over other games. I did this when I lost my "spark" for 40k and so I dabbled in malifaux and WHFB then after a while I saw people playing 40k and I noticed "hey I remember how fun I used to have with that" and I got back into the game and was having a blast by staying out of the competitive scene besides RTT at my FLGS since those always end up being a hoot since all the players there are really fun.
For the competitive scene I prefer WHFB since it has a lot less FotM and is much more balanced for a competitive scene compared to 40k (check the crossroads GT that recently happened they had a brettonia player take 7th end the old dark elves I think took first with skaven trailing behind)
