I am starting an Imperial Guard army. I see that a lot of IG players either have a very tank heavy army or a very model heavy army. I am looking to go about half and half. What would you all suggest?

IMO the best way to do that would be to get some powerful heavy support options such as Manticores, Medusa, and Leman Russ tanks, and have a large number of guardsmen to bubble wrap them behind a defense line

I agree with tybg. Personally, I ve found that keeping a Russ' backside to a board edge can really up its survivability. If the opponent has deep striking stuff, the bubble wrap becomes 10x more important. Otherwise, you can probably just try to power blob or use a rapid-fire gun line while your heavy hitters drop pie plates from a safer position. In this strategy, LRBTs are phenomenal, and a Medusa is great against lists with lots of 2+ armor saves.

Manticores or Medusas on a Skyshield Platform shouldn't be discounted. That 4+ invul save for your arty is pretty usefull

Thanks to all that replied! How do you guys feel about an infantry platoon to make up a bulk of my models?

It's pretty standard for many guard armies. I prefer large troop blobs to 10 man vet squads.

I also have a lord commissar as my hq. Should I replace him with a CCS?

It depends on what you are going for. If you are blobbing your troops together, having a commissar in there is useful. If not that, make sure to take a regimental standard with your CSS. You need a safeguard to ensure your 30 man squad doesn't run off the table in turn 2.

Lord Commissars are good for keeping your men around, while CSS's have those helpful orders. So it really is up to you which route to take. I tend to take one of each in my armies but that is usually because I play Death Korps of Krieg and have a split list of Siege Reg and Assault Brigade.

I prefer a CCS with a Regimental Standard. You get orders while still rerolling morale tests, which has a 12" range over the Lord Commissars 6". However, if you're blobbing your guardsmen you're going to be giving your squads commissars anyway and upgrading one to a LC for 35 points isn't bad
