Just a while ago, my friend and I were talking about silly things you could do with interesting units. While talking, his eyes lit upon the Eversor Assassin and he just stopped.
"What's up?" I asked.
"I've got a terrible idea." He said.
"Well let's hear it." The gleam in his eye had made me curious.
"How many interesting independent characters could we stick with this guy, do you think?"
My heart stopped.
"We need to find out."
And that was the start of a terrible, terrible, great idea.
Combine
1x Lord Kaldar Draigo (HQ 275) with
1x Grey Knight Grand Master (HQ 245)
--Empyrean Brain Mines
--Psychotroke grenades
--Rad Grenades
--Nemesis warding stave
and
1x Eversor Assassin (Elite 130)
...to make one coked-up kill team.
Stick them in an armed-to-the-teeth party bus,
1x Storm Raven Gunship (Fast Attack 235)
--2x Hurricane Bolters
--TL Multi-melta
--TL Assault Cannon
--4x Mindstrike Missiles
Add
1x Vanilla Paladin (Troop 55)
1x Vanilla Paladin (Troop 55)
...Just to maintain force org, for a total of 1000 points,
And you have a terrifying list that writes its own fluff.
Imagine with me, if you will:
A beautiful morning. Necron Lord Zandrak powering up his "give a crap about the day" circuits. Ah, another day, another world to conquer.
Suddenly, a chocking contrail breaks the morning beauty, streaking across the sky.
By the C'tan, the Orks again?
Looking closer, he realizes that no this is not the orks. Though the yellow-painted Stormraven is indeed careening wildly through the sky, and indeed it is heading straight towards his citadel, it lacks the distinct "junk" quality of normal ork-ware. No, this was simply a misplaced ship on a short trip to the ground.
While watching, the ship lurches and takes a sickening nose-dive. Zandrak notices two teleport traces beaming toward the surface; the ship doesn't slow.
Meanwhile, in the cockpit:
Draigo, do you know how to fly this thing? Our paladins just mentioned something about "safer to jump than let you take the wheel." The grandmaster asks, breathing deep the psychotropic fumes.
Lord Kaldor Draigo looks up at the man through his own warp-dusted eyes.
Nooooooo man, but i'll bet I can get it to the ground. He smiles in his own little world.
The ships autopilot pulls up in screeching protest just as it is about to crash into the surface.
Zandrak, vaguely wondering if he may have been wrong about orks watches to see what happens next. Moments later, the side hatch is literally blown outward in clouds of flame and noxious fumes. Two figures in terminator armor step out, followed by a third, gibbering and wild-eyed individual. This was going to be an interesting day indeed.
Gameplay In Brief
Turn-1
I started with the paladins on the field, hiding behind a building right next to where I got to put 2 markers down. Each was in his own hiding spot in his own far corner of the map.
End turn.
Necrons deployed and moved forward, not being able to see or shoot at anything.
Turn-2
Reserve roll is a success! Stormraven moves in 18" and lights up the Ghost Ark! But it's a miss.
Necrons fire back! Misses all around.
Turn-3
Move forward 18", drop off HQ kill team with no scatter.
Light up the Ghost Ark again and knock 2hp out of it.
Kill Team shoots to no effect, then assaults taking all hits like champions. The Ghost Ark ceases to exist moments later.
Necrons fire at both team Draigo and the party bus. No wound scored.
Turn-3
Team Draigo moves forward, shooting along the way, and assault a team of Lychguard. The Empyrean Brain Mines stop one, and the Psycho grenades allow reroll to hit.
Lychguard cease to exist moments later.
Party buss fires at Necron Warriors, ending a good number of them.
Necrons decide to try and light up the party bus since team Draigo is still a decent ways away and the party bus is a bigger threat.
No wounds scored.
Turn-4
Team Draigo moves close enough to attempt an assault on Zandrak's unit who are hiding in ruins.
Party buss fires on Immortals and knocks out half the squad. They fail their Leadership test and back off.
Team Draigo fires at team Zandrak, wounding a good few models, and then assaults, covering the distance.
Necrons score a solid hit on Draigo from overwatch. Draigo is sad at this.
Necrons lose half of their unit to assault (after Zandrak refuses a challenge) and fail a leadership test.
Turn-5
Party bus finishes off the Immortals.
Team Draigo shoot at warriors to minimal effect, instead hoping for a better turn in the assault.
Necrons score a second hit during the assault, this time on the Grandmaster! He is sad about this.
Team Draigo tears apart the remainder of the warriors (Zandrak having refused his challenge again) leaving only Zandrak who runs off the board.
(Roll of 5 to end the game)
Turn-6
Party bus turns on the remaining 5 warriors and finishes them off without flinching.
Team Draigo walk toward the remaining 5 immortals and open fire, dropping 2 of them.
Team Draigo assaults the 1" gap and annihilates the rest.
Game ends 9 points to 0.
Draigo, the Grandmaster and the Eversor Assassin pick up the paladins and head off in the party bus.
Just another day out of the warp.
